Switzerland Co. 44, Rising Sun 39; Boys River Town Round 1 (SEILS Webcast)

Aurora-  In a meeting of two ORVC schools in Thursday’s first round of the Boys’ River Town Classic in Aurora, Switzerland County survived a late run by Rising Sun to defeat the defending champions, 44-39.

This game was part of our Highpoint Health Basketball Webcast Schedule and can be seen again in HD by clicking here.

Coach Rick Scholl’s Shiners led 9-4 at the end of the first quarter as Landon Cole hit a pair of field goals and Chris Bowne knocked down a three ball.  Coby Chase scored all four points for the Pacers.

But coach Adam Dennis saw his Switz team turn up the defensive pressure in the second period and held their northern neighbors to just two points.  As a result, the Swiss gained a 13-11 advantage at halftime.

For the Vevay boys in the quarter, Damian Breeck netted four points and Patrick Stow sank a three.  T.J. Manifold had the only bucket for the Shiners.

The third quarter started with the teams keeping the game close, but Switzerland County closed on a 14-2 run to take command 31-18.  Breeck was a big part of that boom with nine points while Zach Weaver turned in a trey and a deuce for five points.  Kendall Montgomery’s three points were best for the Shiners in the stanza.

A fast start by RS pulled the Sun to within five, 32-27, but the Pacers refused to allow their arch rivals to get any closer.  Switzerland County got back up 11 before one more charge by the Blue and White brought the final spread back down to five, 44-39.

Cole was a huge part of both runs for Rising Sun as he netted 15 points over the final eight minutes, but it wasn’t enough to overtake the collective efforts of Chase, Breeck and others.

Our Southeastern Indiana REMC Power Players of the Game were Switzerland County’s Damian Breeck and Zach Weaver. Breeck led his team in scoring with 17 and also contributed four rebounds, three assists and a steal.  Weaver flirted with a double double as he booked nine points and eight rebounds to go along with three steals and a blocked shot.

Also of note for Switz, Coby Chase scored 11 points, collected two caroms and stole three.  Landon Wilks only scored two points but had game-highs in assists and steals with six each.

On the Rising Sun side, Landon Cole had a game-best 21 points and led his team in rebounds and assists with six and four respectively.  He and TJ Manifold both had two steals with Manifold chipping in six points and three rebounds.

Switzerland County (5-5) will face Lawrenceburg (6-2) in the finals.  The Tigers defeated South Dearborn 54-52 in the other round one game. Rising Sun (1-7) will play the Knights (5-5) in the early consolation game.

Please go see the River Town Classic in person, but if you can’t make it to Aurora, our coverage begins at 5:10 pm on Saturday with the pregame show.  Shiners and Knights tip at 6 pm.  The cheer competition follows and then the Tigers and Pacers will play for the title.

Story continues.
