East Central 73, Batesville 60 (SEILS Webcast)

St. Leon- Intense, big runs and fun to watch. That was Batesville at East Central Saturday in St. Leon. On 63 percent shooting from the field, the Trojans defeated the Bulldogs 73-60 in a non-EIAC event.

This game was part of our Highpoint Health Basketball Webcast Schedule and can be seen again in HD by clicking here.

Coach David Disbro’s Trojans quickly scored the game’s first 15 points, but this bout was going to be anything but a runaway.  Coach Aaron Garrett’s Bulldogs got with 17-10 at the end of the first quarter and, as part of an 18-2 run, took an 18-17 lead early in the second period.

The two teams traded leads three more times on alternating scoring plays.  EC held a 32-26 advantage at halftime thanks in large part to 15 points from AJ Messmore. Teammate Trevor Becker added eight.  Leyton Ratcliffe’s six points headed a balanced BHS scoring attack through two periods with Colt Meyer and Sam Voegele following with five each.

Host East Central upped its favorable spread to 14 points late in the third before Batesville scored the final 10 points of the period to draw within 50-46.  Meyer spearheaded the BHS comeback with 13 points in the frame. Logan Rohrbacher booked six points for EC.

The Dogs got as close as three very early in the fourth, but a 7-2 spurt by the Trojans which followed provided enough cushion to keep the opposition in check.  Added free throws by East Central down the stretch made the final victorious score of 73-60 not really indicative of the game as a whole.

For the Trojans, it was their second win in five games to date while the Bulldogs left St. Leon still in search of their second W through six games played so far.

Trevor Becker and AJ Messmore of East Central were named our Southeastern Indiana REMC Power Players of the Game scoring 22 and 21 points respectively.  Becker also had three rebounds, one assist and a block while Messmore added five boards and three dishes.

Teammate Luke Collinsworth dialed up a double double with 10 points and 12 rebounds plus blocked a pair of shots  Logan Rohrbacher turned in 15 points, six caroms and nine assists.

In the loss for Batesville, Colt Meyer carded a game-high 24 points and chipped in two assists plus one steal and a couple of deflections.  Lleyton Ratcliffe collected 14 points, five boards and a heist.  A.J. Powell put in eight points and logged five rebounds to go along with a two steals and a dish.
