Shawe Names Hambrick New Boys Varsity Basketball Coach

Shawe Memorial High School has named Dan Hambrick as its new varsity boys basketball coach according to this edited release provided by Shawe AD Steve Sims.

Coach Hambrick is no stranger to basketball and a longtime member of the Shawe family.  He served as the head coach of the varsity Lady Hilltoppers from 1990-96 and still stands as the winningest coach in the program’s history with a 66-48 overall record.  After taking time to focus on his family and career, Hambrick is ready enter the basketball coaching world again.

“We are very excited to announce Dan Hambrick as our new boys varsity basketball coach,” said Sims.  “After going through several coaching changes the last few years, we are excited to have someone in place that will be in it for the long haul.”

Two of Hambrick’s children have graduated from Shawe with another one set to in June. He also has two younger sons that attend Pope John.

“We believe we have the person in Dan Hambrick who will lead the program in the right direction,” added Sims.

Hambrick will begin his work as head coach immediately and plans to get summer open gyms and team camps scheduled right away.

“I will be the first one to tell you, I don’t have a high-profile coaching or playing resume,” stated Hambrick.  “I coached the junior high girls at Madison for four seasons and I coached the varsity girls basketball teams here at Shawe for six seasons. I have been officiating high school basketball for over 25 years, so I have been able to stay close to the game during those years I haven’t coached.”

Hambrick hopes to bring consistency and stability to the Shawe boys basketball program.

“It’s tough on any program that will have four different coaches in the last fours years,” Hambrick remarked. “Hopefully that will change with me coming on board.”

Hambrick and his family have been part of the Shawe school system and coaching for almost the last 30 years.

“I have had two children graduate from Shawe, one getting ready to graduate from Shawe in a few weeks, and I have two little boys in the fourth and second grade,” Hambrick noted.  “So to say I have a vested interest in these schools and in this system, yes I do.  I know the schools. I know the students. I know the teachers and our principals, and I know about the program I am coming back to.”

Hambrick likes the coaching staff already in place.

“You couldn’t ask for more Shawe basketball history or coaching experience than Mike Koehler, Mike Gossman, and Michael Kring,” said Hambrick.  “It will be a true blessing to coach with these fine gentlemen. I am truly honored and humbled to be named the varsity boys basketball coach at Shawe.”

We thank Mr. Sims for the press release.
