Tell City 54, Southwestern 48- 2A Regional 12 Semis

Paoli- A historic season for Southwestern Boys’ Basketball came to an end during Saturday’s 2A Regional 12 semifinals in Paoli.  The state’s top ranked Rebels, with a program record 25 wins, fell to No. 11 Tell City, 54-48.

Based purely on the final media poll, some called the win by the Marksmen an upset.  But was it really?

If you looked at the unbiased Jeff Sagarin Computer Ratings (based on statistical data and not opinion), there were only 2.5 points which separated all four teams playing in Paoli.  It was the most competitively balanced regional in the state from top to bottom.  There really was no top.  There really was no bottom.  Any of the four could have won it.  Linton-Stockton did it.

In the first semifinal, the Linton rallied from a 14-point deficit in the second quarter and an 11-point deficit at the end of the third, to shock host Paoli 71-70.  With 4.8 seconds left, the Miners’ Lincoln Hale dribbled the length of the floor, dumped a pass from the free throw line to the left block, finding Sammy Robbins who scored the game winner as time expired.

Linton later defeated Tell City in the finals, 45-36, to capture their fourth regional championship and first since 2015.

While the Marksmen were unable to topple the Miners and claim their first regional since 1973, Tell City earned that opportunity against Linton by knocking off Southwestern in the second semifinal.  The Marksmen did it with defense and their ability to score at the rim.

Down 2-0 at the start, Tell City went on a 7-0 run and held a 9-7 lead at the end of the opening quarter.  Trent Arnold and Braeden Beard scored five and four respectively for the Pocket Conference reps while Tyler Kramer’s 3-point basket was in addition to a field goal each by Zach Cole and Matthew Williams for the ORVC champs.

A Foster Mefford 3-point play to start the second period made it 10-9 Southwestern and was the last time coach Jerry Bomholt’s boys from Hanover had the edge.
