Batesville 69, Greensburg 56- Bulldogs win first 3A-29 title since 2011

Boys Varsity Basketball at Greensburg- Saturday, March 2

Batesville 69, Greensburg 56- 3A Sectional 29 Title

For the first time since 2011, Batesville is the Class 3A Sectional 29 champion. The Bulldogs upset No. 2 Greensburg, 69-56, ending a run of seven consecutive titles for the Pirates which began in 2012.

In the first quarter, there were two lead changes and three ties including 15-15 at the end of opening eight minutes.  Robert Raver of Batesville and Drew Comer of Greensburg each scored seven points.  Both players along with the Bulldogs’ Trey Heidlage and Colt Meyer all hit a 3-point shot. Lane Sparks put in six points for the Pirates with four coming off BHS turnovers.

The game’s final lead change occurred on a Tyler Myers bucket for Batesville to begin the second stanza.  Greensburg came back to tie the contest four more times. The last followed two Comer free throws squaring things at 24-all.

The Bulldogs got a big momentum boost just before halftime.  Meyer made a nice slice to the rim and scored. Then Raver deflected and stole a pass from the Pirates. From the back third of the front court, Raver swished a triple as the buzzer sounded.  It was 35-28 Dogs.

Raver and Meyer both dropped in seven points in the quarter with another 3-ball each.  Andrew Welage hit a trey and a deuce for five Buccaneer points.

The 5-0 run by Batesville to end the half turned into a 10-0 run as Raver scored the first five points of the third quarter.  The first two came on a dunk.  He then converted a 3-point play on a second chance opportunity.  BHS was on top 40-28.

After trailing by 13, a bucket by Cam Adams and two tosses by Comer brought GCHS back within nine by quarter’s end, 45-36.

Three times in the fourth, Greensburg drew within six points.  The last occurrence was on a two by Comer with 4:35 to play.  But a pair of free throws each from Sam Voegele and Meyer plus an offensive stick back by Voegele bumped Batesville back up 10.  From there, a parade of free throws followed and Batesville ended an eight-year playoff drought and sectional title drought to Greensburg with a 69-56 victory.

In the fourth quarter, Batesville was 16 of 18 at the free throw line and made 20 of 23 for the game.  Over the final eight minutes, Voegele was perfect on six tries at the stripe, Meyer made 7 of 8 and Raver netted 3 of 4.
