Rising Sun 51, Switzerland County 35; Shiners win 1st River Town Title

Aurora- Over the last several seasons, many Rising Sun fans have wondered why the Shiners continue to play in the River Town Classic.  Since the tournament’s inception in 2001, the smallest school in the same group of four played 37 straight tournaments (counting the 2019 girls) without a championship. A streak like that can wear on even the most loyal follower.

But on Saturday at South Dearborn, coach Rick Scholl and the Shiner boys ended the drought.  Following Thursday’s 55-47 win over four-time defending champion Lawrenceburg, the Blue and White defeated Switzerland County in the title game, 51-35. The Pacers had beaten the Shiners by 18 in Rising Sun on December 8.

The championship was a looooooong time coming.

Rising Sun never trailed as it opened with the game’s first seven points, including a 3-pointer by Landon Cole, and finished the frame in front 13-5.  Five different Shiner players scored.  Noah Pflum led with four.  The Pacers’ Coby Chase sank a 3-ball to stop the initial Shiner burst.

The Sun’s lead increased to 10 on a Wesley Rider triple in the second stanza. But coach Adam Dennis’ squad from Vevay fought back to get within three at the half, 20-17, thanks in part to long balls by Chase and Damian Breeck.  Tyler Konkle of the Swiss and Nick Koons of RS both posted four quarter points.

Turnovers were a key stat through the first 16 minutes.  Switzerland County committed eight and Rising Sun converted those to eight points.  The Shiners only had two miscues which yielded no opposing points.

In the third quarter, it was all Pflum, all the time, commercial free.  The Shiner senior guard scored all 15 of Rising Sun’s points, including the period’s first 12 points, to give his team a 32-17 advantage.

Story continues.
