Edited recap from Shawe’s Geno Pawlak- Shawe took the field for the very first time in 2021 hosting Milan at home. The Hilltoppers fought hard before dropping a 5-4 decision in 7 innings.

Hunter Kennett started on the mound for Shawe and threw 3 solid innings allowing only 1 run on 3 hits.  Wyatt Nichter pitched in relief and took the loss allowing 4 runs on 5 hits.

Milan started the scoring in the first pushing across one run on 2 hits.  Shawe answered in the bottom half.  Jacob Hertz led off with a single, stole second and scored on a single by Philip Kahn.  The score stayed 1-1 until the 4th when Milan scored 4 runs on 4 hits and were aided by 2 Hilltopper errors.  Shawe answered in the bottom of the 5th when Christian Whitham led off with a walk, went to third on a hit by Zach Gish and scored on a double by Jacob Hertz.  The Hilltoppers made it interesting in the bottom of the 7th when Whitham opened with a walk and went to third on single by Hertz.  Kahn laced a double in the gap scoring Whitham and Hertz, but the rally fell short.

Hertz was 3-4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI. Kahn was 2-3 with 3 RBI and Zach Gish added 2 singles.

Overall, I was very pleased with how we played, especially considering this was our first game and how young we are. We have 10 first year players with 7 freshmen and 3 sophomores, only 2 juniors and no seniors.  Our inexperience showed a little in the 4th inning.  We probably should have limited the damage to 2 runs max.  But I liked the effort and know that we will only get better.
