(webcast) Batesville 5, Connersville 3

Batesville- In the first EIAC baseball game of the season for both clubs Monday, host Batesville defeated Connersville 5-3 at Liberty Park.

This game was part of our Bruns-Gutzwiller Spring Webcast Schedule and can be seen again on the IHSAA Champions Network by clicking here.

The scoring opened in the bottom of the first when Batesville’s Max Baumer singled with two outs and was later knocked in on a base hit to center by Trey Peters.

The Bulldogs threatened again in the third with two on board and only one out, but Spartan pitcher Gavin Lynch fanned the next two batters looking and left the runners stranded.  The score remained 1-0 Batesville.

In the top of the fourth, Connersville loaded the bases without the benefit of a hit.  With two outs, the Spartans Gavin Jones hit a smash off the glove of BHS pitcher Riley Zink.  As the ball was slowed considerably, a charging Peters from second had no chance to make a play.  Jones got an RBI as Chance Bentley scored from third.  Braxton Myers then crossed the dish on a wild pitch giving Connersville a 2-1 lead.

But Batesville jumped back in front in its next at bat during the home fourth.  Peters reached on an infield error and later scored on a wild pitch.  Jacob Meer boarded on a fielder’s choice then Cole Werner followed with a single that was knocked down behind the second base bag.  Travis Lecher then lined a two-out single to left scoring both Meer and Werner to make it 4-2 Dogs.

The fifth inning saw the boys from Fayette County get back within a run.  Gavin Pearson reached on a two-out walk and stole second.  He took third when Bentley made first base on an infield error.  Myers then singled to left to score Pearson.  It was now 4-3.

Batesville’s defense had turned a double play during the Connersville third.  The Spartan infield did the same in the fifth.  And then with a Bulldog runner at third, CHS right fielder Chanler Fox made a nice running catch along the foul line to keep the scoring difference at a single run.

But it was Lecher of Batesville who had the defensive play of the night during the visitor’s sixth inning.  With one out and Lynch on second representing the Spartans tying run, Quenten Leisure singled into center field. CHS gambled and tried to score Lynch, but a charging Lecher fired the ball home to catcher Zach Wade who applied the tag for a huge second out.  Baumer, pitching in relief of Zink, struck out the next batter to end the half inning.
