2020 Oldenburg Baseball Outlook from Doug Behlmer

Prior to the start of any season, there is always an air of hope and optimism by coaches and players.  Unfortunately, that hope and optimism for the spring sports season was dashed for everyone with its cancellation due to COVID-19.

But we asked coaches to share with us what they were looking forward to: team outlook, individual hopes and expectations or anything else about the season in general.  We’ll be sharing those stories as we receive them and we appreciate those who took the time to send us their thoughts.

Oldenburg coach Doug Behlmer- Expectations were high for the Oldenburg Academy baseball team in 2020 with all but two starters and nearly all pitching returning from a 16-8-1 campaign in 2019. A record number of kids (31) were set to tryout and compete for a spot on the varsity and JV rosters.

Seniors and three year letter winners Adam Huber, Matthew Sedler and Michael Hoff were set to return to the varsity lineup. Senior Abe Peetz, who missed the 2019 season due to injury, was preparing to return and add offensive punch to the batting order along with competing for a spot on the defense. Incoming senior transfer Anthony Jones was looking to compete for a spot in the lineup as well.

Returning junior starters included: Riley Schebler, Andrew Oesterling, Christopher Hautman, Patrick Thompson and Race Carle. Juniors Pros Moorman and Nicholas Hoff were looking to compete for varsity playing time and provide depth at key positions. Additional juniors and members of the sophomore and freshman class were also looking to compete each day in practice and in junior varsity games to catch the eye of one of the coaches for a call up to the varsity team.

We are certainly disappointed for all players that we will not be on the diamond this spring but we especially feel for our seniors as this was their last opportunity to wear the OA uniform and play the great game of baseball at the high school level.
