2020 Milan Baseball Outlook from Jeff Stutler

Prior to the start of any season, there is always an air of hope and optimism by coaches and players.  Unfortunately, that hope and optimism for the spring sports season was dashed for everyone with its cancellation due to COVID-19.

But we asked coaches to share with us what they were looking forward to: team outlook, individual hopes and expectations or anything else about the season in general.  We’ll be sharing those stories as we receive them and we appreciate those who took the time to send us their thoughts.

Milan coach Jeff Stutler-  The Milan Indians’ Baseball team was anxiously awaiting the 2020 season. After a co-championship in the ORVC and losing just two starters to graduation, the team had high expectations this year and would have been led by four seniors.

Dakota Sams was coming off of a .415 batting average and would have been one of our biggest forces playing a solid third base.  Treyton Robbins led last year’s team in stolen bases.  He also had a .327 batting average and worked hard in the off season to improve his swing. We were very anxious to see him in the lead-off spot this year. Brayden Furr would have been another returning letter winner at first base bringing a solid mid-lineup hitter from the left side and a go-to southpaw on the mound. Matt Steinmetz played a limited role last year but was determined to assert himself in a starting role for his senior year. With all his hard work in the off season, we were anxious to see him reap the benefits.

We at Milan were expecting one of our best years with so many returning players. We had strong starting pitching with Graden Taylor and Carsyn Ashermann plus planning to use Dakota Sams in relief. We also had many developing pitchers giving us more options on the mound. We had a strong lineup offensively and defensively that would have caused a lot of problems for opponents on our schedule.

I feel especially sad for our seniors who put in so much work for their senior season, but I know the character of these young men and am confident this is just a setback to their successful future.
