2020 South Ripley Baseball Outlook from Steve Franklin

Prior to the start of any season, there is always an air of hope and optimism by coaches and players.  Unfortunately, that hope and optimism for the spring sports season was dashed for everyone with its cancellation due to COVID-19.

But we asked coaches to share with us what they were looking forward to: team outlook, individual hopes and expectations or anything else about the season in general.  We’ll be sharing those stories as we receive them and we appreciate those who took the time to send us their thoughts.

South Ripley coach Steve Franklin- For South Ripley Baseball this spring, we were excited and very optimistic about having an outstanding year. It probably would have been one of the best seasons of my coaching career at South Ripley. I had three returning starting seniors from last year and another who moved back to South Ripley who was going to play and contribute. We also had five juniors and one sophomore coming back from last year’s varsity team.

This probably would have been the hardest throwing pitching staff that I would have ever had.  I had one kid coming back who missed last year due to injury and, with him, we would have had two kids throwing 85-plus and another throwing in the lower 80s.  And to what I’ve witnessed in the ORVC, there haven’t been many teams with that kind of pitching in the past.

We thought our pitching was going to carry us a long way but also had great athletes in the other parts of the game as well. Our defense was definitely going to be solid and the offense was going to achieve great things as we had kids working very hard and determined to improve that aspect of their game. We were all excited about this year and talked many times about what we wanted to achieve this year for it to only disappear.

I would like to personally thank all of my seniors: Aaron Grewie, Trenton Burford, Cory Ralston and Dakota Day. You guys will be truly missed for the South Ripley baseball program. You have dedicated your last few years in the spring to baseball and I’m grateful and appreciative of that. You guys improved so much, not just as baseball players, but great young men as well. You have the ability to do great things in your future, so never settle and achieve great things.
