The game billed as a pitcher’s duel lived up to the hype as it took extra innings to crown the champion at 2A-Sectional 45 at South Ripley. The Austin Eagles prevailed 2-1 over the Southwestern Rebels in ten innings.

Austin ace and St. Louis University recruit Drew Buhr wasted no time making his presence known on the mound as he struck out the side in order to open the game. In the bottom of the first, Bailey Elliott made his presence known fanning Buhr and working around a Trevor Peters hit to keep the score even at 0-0.

Mitchell Adcock opened the second inning with a single for the Rebels, one of two hits that Buhr would surrender. After striking out Talon Harmon, the first of two-inning errors would set up the Rebels first run. Foster Mefford reached courtesy of an error moving Adcock’s courtesy runner, Trevor Smith, to second. Another fan by Buhr set up the two-out error that allowed Smith to score. Dylan West hit a ball sharply up the middle but a diving play by Austin second-baseman, Conner Capps, kept it from reaching the outfield. On the attempted force at second, Peyton Hollan was unable to keep ahold of the ball. Aggressive baserunning by Smith saw him come home ahead of the throw and take a 1-0 lead. Buhr would retire another Rebel hitter via a strikeout to stop any more scoring threats.

Both pitchers worked 1-2-3 third innings and Buhr continued that into the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth, Trevor Peters collected the only extra base hit of the game with his lead-off triple. Peters sent a rocket to left field and ran through the stop sign held up by Austin coach Matt Bayes to advance to third. Jake Cole sent the first pitch to right field and scored Peters on the sacrifice fly. Elliott would get out of the inning retiring the next two batters with the score knotted at 1-1.

In the fifth, Buhr recorded his second 1-2-3 inning via Southwestern strikeouts but Bailey Elliott matched his counterpart in the bottom of the inning sending the Eagles down swinging three straight times.

The Rebels got the lead-off man aboard to start the sixth in Tyler Kramer. Buhr used a pickoff move to retire Kramer on the basepath. Two batters later, Zach Cole was hit by the pitch and reached first. Again, with Mitchell Adcock batting and two-outs, Buhr used another pickoff move to get out of the inning as Cole was caught at first. The Eagles went down in order in the sixth to keep the quick moving game tied at one apiece.
