Madison 4, Greensburg 2; 3A-29 Semifinal

In the first 3A Sectional 29 baseball semifinal on Saturday at South Dearborn, Madison used a 3-run 3rd inning to punch their ticket to the championship game on Memorial Day defeating Greensburg 4-2.

Madison pitcher Hunter Ferris and Greensburg hurler Cam Adams had complete control of the first two innings. Ferris allowed one-hit while Adams was working a no-hitter. In the top of the third, a passed ball on strike three gave the Cubs a spark. Ferris hustled down to first after the strike-out and Cooper Yancey singled to stop the no-hit attempt. Zach Forner then started the scoring with a two-run scoring double. Forner moved to third on a fielder’s choice setting up an exciting third run for Madison. Catcher Gabe True stepped in and laid down a perfect bunt as Forner was coming home on the suicide squeeze. The play worked to perfection giving the Cubs a 3-0 lead after two and a half innings.

In the bottom of the third, Greensburg’s Logan Smith lead off with a double. Two batters later, David Blankman knocked another double to score Smith. With two outs, Cade Reynolds hit a single to left and Blankman was running hard to the plate. SD’s Forner fielded it cleanly and hit his cut-off man, third-baseman Mason Welsh, who delivered the relay to True at the plate to tag Blankman and end the Pirate threat.

In the bottom of the fourth, Cole Nobbe led off with a walk for the Pirates. Aaron Moeller singled moving Nobbe into scoring position. Sam Bower’s bunt attempt was caught by Ferris for the first out. Right-fielder Eric Million single to score Nobbe and cut the lead to 3-2 in favor of the Cubs. Logan Smith hit a solid shot to Forner who alertly got the ball back to second base to double off Moeller and stop another Pirate threat. Ferris would only allow two singles in the final three innings to secure the win for Madison.

The Cubs would add an insurance run in the fifth inning as Cooper Yancey opened with a single and moved to second on a passed ball. Zach Forner recorded his second RBI with a single. Greensburg made a pitching change as Ben Duerstock replaced starter Cam Adams. Duerstock limited Madison allowing one-hit and striking out five.

Hunter Ferris’ complete-game gem saw two strike-outs, three walks, and seven hits while allowing two runs. The Madison defense help the man on the mound with runners being thrown out on stealing attempts and at the plate. Madison will face South Dearborn in the championship game on Memorial Day as the Knights advanced defeating Rushville 17-7 in six innings.
