Final Athletes of the Week for Spring 2021

Thanks to everyone who submitted Athletes of the Week.  This is the final edition for Spring 2021 based on the final two weeks of May.  Because the volume was low, we did not do any Elite selections.  All AOWs from the last two week are shown below.

Bree Bischoff of Franklin County

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Softball
  • Athlete’s year/position: Junior Pitcher/Outfielder

  • Athlete’s accomplishments: In a game against Cambridge City Lincoln, Bree threw a no-hitter going 6 innings with no hits, no runs, 1 walk and 1 hit by pitch.

Kloe Bolos of Franklin County

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Softball
  • Athlete’s year/position: Senior Outfielder/Catcher

  • Athlete’s accomplishments: In four games played, Kloe hit 6 for 11 with a double, 3 RBI and a run.

Shaden Galyen of Franklin County

  • Level/Sport: JV Softball
  • Athlete’s year/position: Junior Outfielder

  • Submitter’s position: Varsity Softball Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: In 3 games played, Shaden hit 5 for 7 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored.  She had an on base percentage of .778 (7 of 9).

Janae Comer/Hailey Duerstock of Greensburg

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Girls Tennis
  • Athlete’s year/position: #2 Doubles
  • Submitted by: Katrina Peters
  • Submitter’s position: Head Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: Janae and Hailey finished the season 16-2. They beat Madison in round 1 of the sectional and beat Southwestern Hanover in round 2. Their only losses on the year were to East Central.

Ellie Waldron of South Ripley

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Softball
  • Athlete’s year/position: Junior Pitcher/1st Baseman

  • Submitter’s position: Head Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: (Week 1) Ellie hit 3 for 7 with a double, 5 RBI and scored 2 runs.  She also pitched 7 innings and recorded a no hitter giving up no runs and no hits while striking out 11. (Week 2) Ellie earned all-sectional honors going 4 for 9 with two doubles and a home run.  She had 2 RBI and a stolen base while scoring 5 runs.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: Ellie is a triple threat player.  Season to date, she is a .478 hitter with 5 home runs, has pitched 40 innings with a 1.40 ERA and 57 strikeouts. Ellie also has a perfect fielding percentage at first base. a
  • Other information: Ellie is also a two-time all-conference player.

Mady Tompkins of South Ripley

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Softball
  • Athlete’s year/position: Junior Pitcher

  • Submitter’s position: Head Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: Mady was named Sectional MVP.  She hit 3 for 6 with a home run, 6 RBI and scored 3 runs.  She pitched 19 innings and allowed only one run on 9 hits while striking out 38.
  • Other information: Mady is the school record holder for single season strikeouts pitched (178), season batting average (.585) and home runs (9). She is also a 2022 verbal commit to the University of Illinois Springfield.

Brionna Linkel of South Ripley

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Softball
  • Athlete’s year/position: Sophomore 3rd Baseman

  • Submitter’s position: Head Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: Brionna was named to the All-Sectional team and had a perfect fielding percentage.  She batted 5 for 9 with a double and scored 3 runs.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: Brionna is a defensive leader on the field who leads by example through determination, hustle and ability to read an offense.

Cassie Franklin of South Ripley

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Softball
  • Athlete’s year/position: Junior Center Field
  • Submitted by: Shane Tompkins
  • Submitter’s position: Head coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: Cassie was named to the All-Sectional team.  She hit 5 for 11 with 2 RBI.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: Cassie is the leader of our outfield.

Alexa Heidt of South Ripley

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Softball
  • Athlete’s year/position: Junior Shortstop
  • Submitted by: Shane Tompkins
  • Submitter’s position: Head Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: Alexa was named to the All-Sectional team.  She batted 4 for 9 with 2 doubles, 2 RBI, scored 3 runs and 2 stolen bases.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: Alexa is a player who has dedicated herself to improve at every practice and it has shown through the second half of our season. She takes improving personal and makes it happen. Speed at middle infield and on the bases is her forte.

Athlete’s name: Zach Cole of Southwestern

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Baseball
  • Athlete’s year/position: Junior Shortstop and Pitcher
  • Submitted by: Dan Thurston
  • Submitter’s position: Head Baseball Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: Zach led the Rebels to a 5-1 week including pitching what ended up being the ORVC Championship game. For the week, he was 7-for-14 with 3 doubles, 4 RBI, scored 12 runs and was 5-for-5 in stolen bases. On the mound, Zach pitched 7 innings allowing 8 hits and 1 walk while striking out 11.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: Zach is one of our team leaders. He is not a rah-rah leader, but leads by example. His baseball IQ is off the charts.
  • Other information: Zach has a 4.128 GPA (4.410 weighted GPA) and ranks 4th in his class. He is a leader within the school and always seems to go above and beyond.

Dakota Wallace of Switzerland County

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Baseball
  • Athlete’s year/position: Senior Pitcher, Catcher and Infielder
  • Submitted by: Mike Turner and Shane Griffin
  • Submitter’s position: Head Coach and Assistant Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: In three games played, Dakota was 2 for 5 with 2 doubles, 3 RBI and 5 walks. He also pitched a 5 inning complete game with 7 strikeouts, 0 runs and just 2 hits in a win against Trimble County.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: Dakota was very determined to get the job done on Senior Night for us with his 2-hit shutout win versus Trimble County.

Bryce Turner of Switzerland County

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Baseball
  • Athlete’s year/position: Junior Catcher/Shortstop
  • Submitted by: Mike Turner and Shane Griffin
  • Submitter’s position: Head Coach and Asst. Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments:  In three game played, Bryce was 5 for 10 with 1 double, 1 home run and 6 RBI.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: Bryce continues to help us defensively by playing multiple positions while also leading our offense.

Kaleb Koons of Switzerland County

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Baseball
  • Athlete’s year/position: Sophomore 1st Baseman

  • Athlete’s accomplishments: In three games played, Kaleb was 5 for 9 with 1 double, 4 runs scored and 3 stolen bases.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: Kaleb continues to be a solid performer at first base and on the mound. He is a great asset offensively for us as well.
