Athletes of the Week for December 14-19

SEI Local Sports thanks our area coaches and athletic directors who took the time to honor one or more of their varsity, junior varsity and freshmen athletes as an Athlete of the Week (AOW). This edition is for the period of December 14-19, 2020. Every athlete submitted is worthy and honored as an AOW.

In addition, a committee has selected a group of varsity level AOWs as Elite Athletes of the Week based on the number and quality of varsity level submissions for each gender of both the EIAC and ORVC conferences.  ORVC includes Oldenburg (a state independent).

While some athletes participate in sports not recognized as conference sports by the EIAC and ORVC, those athletes are still eligible for Elite AOW consideration under their school’s EIAC or ORVC/Independent affiliation.

The 6-2 guard played just one game last week but was on fire at Jennings County as he helped the Pirates to a 73-63 triumph and a 3-0 start to the season. Sparks, a Huntington University commit, was a robust 17-25 from the field, knocking down one of his two 3-point attempts, plus he was 4-5 from the free throw line, as he poured in 39 of Greensburg’s 73 points. He also contributed in other ways, grabbing eight rebounds, handing out three assists, and collecting five thefts.

ORVC/INDEPENDENT BOYS’ ELITE ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Varsity Boys Basketball Team of South Ripley

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Boys Basketball
  • Athlete’s year/position: Team
  • Submitted by: Coaching Staff
  • Submitter’s position: Coaching Staff
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: The Raiders have jumped out to a 5-0 start which has not been done since the 1995-96 season. We’ve had several guys mentioned for their accomplishments (such as Nick Schwarte and Cody Samples again this week), but this team is well balanced.  Behind point guard Zach Gentile, he has pushed this Raider offense to a 74 point per game average.  Along with Gentile, guard Blake Volz brings toughness and timely scoring.  Bryce Franklin, Clinton Patrick and Dalton Smith have also added huge play for the Raiders.  Our staff has enjoyed every moment we get to spend together on the court.  Their hard work and dedication have paid off thus far.

ORVC/INDEPENDENT GIRLS’ ELITE ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Sarah Meyer of South Ripley

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Girls Basketball
  • Athlete’s year/position: Junior Forward
  • Submitted by: Matt McNew

  • Submitter’s personal comments: Sarah logged a career-high 20 points against Greensburg after posting a career-high 16 points against Hauser 2 days earlier.
