Athletes Of The Week for September 2-7

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

SEI Local Sports would like to thank our area coaches and athletic directors who took the time to honor one or more of their varsity, junior varsity and freshmen athletes as an Athlete of the Week (AOW). This edition is for the period September 2-7, 2019. Every athlete submitted is worthy and honored as an AOW.

In addition, a committee has selected a group of varsity level AOWs as Elite Athletes of the Week.  This special list includes one to three varsity athletes per gender, per conference (EIAC and ORVC/Independent).  The number of Elites selected is based on the number and quality of varsity level submissions for each gender of each conference.

While some athletes participate in sports not recognized as conference sports by the EIAC and ORVC, those athletes are still eligible for Elite AOW consideration under their school’s EIAC or ORVC/Independent affiliation.

EIAC GIRLS’ ELITE ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Molly Gregg of East Central

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Volleyball
  • Athlete’s year/position: Senior Setter/Outside Hitter
  • Submitted by: Cassie Laker
  • Submitter’s position: Head Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: Over the course of 3 matches and only 9 sets, Molly led our team in almost every category. Offensively, she was 43/45 serving with 4 aces and she hit with great efficiency going 61/67 with 22 kills. In the back court, Molly was 12/12 on serve reception and added 27 digs for the week. Most impressively though, she was 164/164 setting with a team high 56 assists. During that time, she set a new school record for career assists, breaking the 13-year record of 1,801 assists. Molly currently has 1,804 and counting for her career.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: Molly works harder than anyone and has done so since the day she walked in as a freshman. I could probably count on one hand how many volleyball events she has missed, including off-season open gyms, workouts and fundraisers. I look forward to her breaking 2,000 assists before the season ends!
  • Other information: Molly is the youngest of all of her siblings. She has six older sisters who all played volleyball and has one older brother.

Olivia Yager of Rushville

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Volleyball
  • Athlete’s year/position: Sophomore Setter
  • Submitted by: Nanette Scanlan
  • Submitter’s position: Head Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: With every game, Olivia just keeps getting better and better. She had an outstanding week leading the team to a 4-2 record and winning the Rushville Invitational with 56 points, 11 aces, 9 kills, 81 assists, and 77 digs. Olivia makes it look easy but works very hard. She gets the ball to where it needs to be for our hitters.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: Olivia is that athlete you can’t wait to see what she is going to be like when she is a senior. She just has so much raw talent. You enjoy watching her play because she just flows with the action.
