Athletes Of The Week March 2-30 (first of the season)

SEI Local Sports would like to thank our area coaches and athletic directors who took the time to honor one or more of their varsity, junior varsity and freshman athletes as an Athlete of the Week (AOW). This expanded edition (first of the season) is for the period March 2-30, 2019. Every athlete submitted is worthy of this honor and we are proud to showcase all of them!

In addition, a committee has selected a group of varsity level AOWs as Elite Athletes of the Week.  This special list includes one to three varsity athletes per gender, per conference (EIAC and ORVC/Independent).  The number of Elites selected is based on the number and quality of varsity level submissions for each gender of each conference.

While some athletes participate in sports not recognized as conference sports by the EIAC and ORVC, those athletes are still eligible for Elite AOW consideration under the EIAC or ORVC/Independent umbrellas.

Congratulations to this group of outstanding athletes selected by committee as our Elite Athletes of the Week for March 2-30, 2019.

East Central 4 x 200 Relay Team of Keiton Goeldner, Alex Hornback, Chase Ludwig, Eric Perkins

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Boys Track
  • Athlete’s year/position: Keiton (SR), Alex (SR), Chase (JR), Eric (SO)
  • Submitted by: Tom Harris
  • Submitter’s position: Head Track Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments:  Our 4 x 200 relay team of Keiton, Alex, Chase and Eric initially qualified 28th for the indoor state meet.  On March 20, we got a call indicating 4 teams had dropped.  That moved us up to 24th and only the top 24 advance to state.  Despite being seeded last and in a slow heat, the boys ran 3 seconds faster than their qualifying time which put them in the mix of getting to the podium. After all the heats were done, our boys finished 6th in the indoor state meet.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: It was awesome to watch heat after heat where we were still in the hunt for a medal. Heat one (the fast heat) came in and we were still in 3rd place. Only three teams from the fast heat ran faster and the celebration was on. It was great to see how happy the boys were and how proud the parents and coaches were.

Graci Cornett of South Dearborn

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Softball

  • Submitter’s personal comments: Graci is a hard worker who excels both on and off the field. Her leadership helps her push her teammates to new levels as well as herself. She’s the voice of the team that is needed to push us through games. Graci has worked hard during practice which has helped her excel both on the mound and in the batters box. She’s a very coachable individual, always looking for ways to better herself.
  • Other information: Gracie maintains a 3.81 GPA and is an active participant in National Honor Society. She has plans to become a nurse upon graduation.
