Athletes Of The Week for January 21-26

SEI Local Sports would like to thank our area coaches and athletic directors who took the time to honor one or more of their varsity, junior varsity and freshman athletes as an Athlete of the Week (AOW). This edition is for the period January 21-26, 2019. Every athlete submitted is worthy of this honor and we are proud to showcase all of them!

In addition, a committee has selected a group of varsity level AOWs as Elite Athletes of the Week.  This special list includes one to three varsity athletes per gender, per conference (EIAC and ORVC/Independent).  The number of Elites selected is based on the number and quality of varsity level submissions for each gender of each conference.

While some athletes participate in sports not recognized as conference sports by the EIAC and ORVC, those athletes are still eligible for Elite AOW consideration under the EIAC or ORVC/Independent umbrellas.

ORVC/INDEPENDENT GIRLS’ ELITE ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Mariah Day of Jac-Cen-Del

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Girls Basketball
  • Athlete’s year/position: Senior Guard
  • Submitted by: Scott Smith
  • Submitter’s position: Head Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: In two Ohio River Valley Conference wins last week that gave us the outright conference championship, Mariah recorded 43 points, 16 assists, 15 rebounds, 3 blocks and 5 steals. In the conference showdown vs. South Ripley, Mariah scored 21 points on 4-10 shooting, including 3 from beyond the arc and 10-11 from the FT line.  She also dished 5 assists and grabbed 7 rebounds. Two nights later in the win over Southwestern Hanover, Mariah just missed a triple-double, scoring 22 points, dishing 10 assists, and grabbing 8 rebounds. She was 7-15 from the field with 2 triples and 6-7 from the FT line.

Bella Marcum of Southwestern

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Girls Basketball
  • Athlete’s year/position: Junior Guard/Small Forward
  • Submitted by: Devin Brierly
  • Submitter’s position: Head Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: In 2 games, Bella had 25 points, 13 rebounds, 4 steals, 1 block, 5 assists, and shot 46% from the field.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: Bella was huge in our upset against 1A #10 Trinity Lutheran. She kept us alive in the first half, giving us the confidence that we could compete with a tough team. Against Jac-Cen-Del, she did just the same. Her no fear mentality and work ethic cannot be matched. Without her energy and efforts on the floor, we do not win some of the games we did this season. I truly believe she deserves to be recognized for all of the little things she does that may not always show up in the stats. Many times Bella causes disruptions on defense with multiple deflections during a game and also gets down low and beats and bangs with girls bigger and stronger than she is. She doesn’t take anything from anybody and often frustrates opposing teams post players. We count on Bella to do a lot of things that some kids may not enjoy doing, but she embraces the challenges and faces them head on, full speed (literally). I can’t say enough how instrumental she is to our team.
