Athletes Of The Week for October 1-6

SEI Local Sports would like to thank our area coaches and athletic directors who took the time to honor one or more of their varsity, junior varsity and freshman athletes as an Athlete of the Week (AOW). This edition is for the period of October 1-6, 2018. Every athlete submitted is worthy of this honor and we are proud to showcase all of them!

In addition, a committee has selected a group of varsity level AOWs as Elite Athletes of the Week.  This special list includes two or three varsity athletes per gender, per conference (EIAC and ORVC/Independent).  The number of Elites selected (2 or 3) is based on the number of varsity level submissions for each gender of each conference.  The number may be reduced if the committee cannot reach a majority decision for a selection.

While some athletes participate in sports not recognized as conference sports by the EIAC and ORVC, those athletes are still eligible for Elite AOW consideration under the EIAC or ORVC/Independent umbrellas.

Congratulations to this group of outstanding athletes selected by committee as our Elite Athletes of the Week for October 1-6, 2018.

Boys Varsity Cross Country Team of Batesville

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Boys Cross Country
  • Athlete’s year/position: 3 Juniors, 2 Sophomores, 2 Freshmen
  • Submitted by: Lisa Gausman
  • Submitter’s position: Head Cross Country Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: The Batesville boys are Sectional Champions. They had an incredibly low score of 22 points with 6 boys in the top 10 and making the All-Sectional Team! The boys are led by freshman Ean Loichinger and teammates Adam Moster, Benjamin Moster, Joshua Myers, Dillon Murray, Luke Esser and Daren Smith.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: Two of our original seven varsity runners could not participate Saturday so our eighth and ninth runners had to step up. Our #8 took advantage of the opportunity and was 10th overall!
  • Other information: These boys have an incredible work ethic.  They set goals and they reach for them!

Lauren Kelley of Franklin County

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Cross Country
  • Athlete’s year/position: Sophomore
  • Submitted by: Stacey Nobbe
  • Submitter’s position: Head Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: Lauren won the Connersville Sectional with a time of 21:25. She finished ahead of the second place runner by just over a minute. Lauren took the lead before the first mile and just kept stretching out that lead throughout the race. The way she is able to get out and maintain the lead is phenomenal. She helped to assure the Franklin County girls team earned second place and advance to the regional tournament.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: Lauren is such a competitor. She stays calm and never gives up. She encourages her teammates and is always ready for a challenge.

Girls Varsity Cross Country Team of Batesville

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Girls Cross Country
  • Athlete’s year/position: 1 Junior, 2 Sophomores, 4 Freshmen
  • Submitted by: Lisa Gausman
  • Submitter’s position: Head Cross Country Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: The Batesville girls are Sectional Champions with six members being named to the All-Sectional Team: Liz Loichinger, Lily Pinckley, Trysta Vierling, Sarah Ripperger, Katie Olsen, Maria Lopez and Ava Ralston.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: These girls have worked so hard all season and I am very excited for their accomplishment this past Saturday.  But I am more excited to see them compete this coming Saturday at Regionals.
  • Other information: These girls are led by Liz and Lily and the other five call themselves the “POA” (Pack of Awesome). They really try to stay together in a pack every meet and this has contributed to some of their success.

Volleyball Seniors of East Central

Level/Sport: Varsity Volleyball

  • Athlete’s year/position: All seniors: Mack Ewing (OH/DS), Bailey Grunkemeyer (OP/DS), Ashley Dudley (DS), Ava Billman (MH), Lauren Foster (DS), Anna Andres (DS) and Grace Egbers (DS).
  • Submitted by: Cassie Laker
  • Submitter’s position: Head Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: This senior class has helped lead our team to a 30-2 regular season record. This is the second 30 win season in two years and they have all been a large part of that. Through their four years at EC, we have won more games at the varsity level than any other class, with at least one senior contributing at the varsity level each of those four years.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: The seniors all continue to be leaders on and off the court. They lead by example, they work hard every single day, and they fulfill their role in every aspect. This class is talented on the court, but even stronger off the court with an average GPA of 3.8. This class will be missed, but they aren’t finished just yet!

Eli Sporleder of Oldenburg Academy

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Football
  • Athlete’s year/position: Senior QB and Linebacker
  • Submitted by: Eric Feller

  • Athlete’s accomplishments: Last Friday, Eli had 13 carries for 138 yards, was 7-11 passing for 75 yards and had 8 tackles (5 solo and 2.5 for a loss).
  • Submitter’s personal comments: Eli is a four year starter and continues to carry the load for OA. He added 2 more 2 TDs on Friday to give him 10 for the season. Eli is leading an OA team that is now 4-4 in their 6th year of football.
  • Other information: Eli thinks he’s a great dancer but is average…at best.

Emma Weberding of Oldenburg Academy

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Girls Soccer
  • Athlete’s year/position: Freshman Midfielder
  • Submitted by: Troy Cockrum
  • Submitter’s position: Head Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: Emma scored a goal in each of our three sectional games helping to lead us to a sectional title. Although other players scored multiple goals, Emma was the only one to score in all three games.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: Emma has matured and improved quite a bit throughout the season and has become a consistent contributor in our midfield.
