Athletes Of The Week for September 24-29

SEI Local Sports would like to thank our area coaches and athletic directors who took the time to honor one or more of their varsity, junior varsity and freshman athletes as an Athlete of the Week (AOW). This edition is for the period of September 24-29, 2018. Every athlete submitted is worthy of this honor and we are proud to showcase all of them!

In addition, a committee has selected a group of varsity level AOWs as Elite Athletes of the Week.  This special list includes two or three varsity athletes per gender, per conference (EIAC and ORVC/Independent).  The number of Elites selected (2 or 3) is based on the number of varsity level submissions for each gender of each conference.  The number may be reduced if the committee cannot reach a majority decision for a selection.

While some athletes participate in sports not recognized as conference sports by the EIAC and ORVC, those athletes are still eligible for Elite AOW consideration under the EIAC or ORVC/Independent umbrellas.

Congratulations to this group of outstanding athletes selected by committee as our Elite Athletes of the Week for September 24-29, 2018.

Batesville’s Austin Siefert

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Football
  • Athlete’s year/position: Senior Wide Receiver/Defensive Back
  • Submitted by: Evan Ulery
  • Submitter’s position: Head Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: Austin had a career night performance on his Senior Night as he set three new single game records, a new Batesville single season record, and a new Batesville career record. Austin had 11 receptions for 218 yards and 4 receving touchdowns. All three numbers are new school records in a single game. Additionally, he record one interception. Austin also surpassed Rick Freese’s (1981) single season reception record of 43. Austin currently has 48 receptions on the season. Additionally, Austin passed former teammate Christian Prickel’s (2017) record of 78 career receptions. Austin currently has 80 career receptions.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: Austin is a captain on the football team. He is a two sport athlete as he also plays basketball.  Austin plays a lot bigger than his 5’10” frame. He is one of the best players I have ever coached in tracking and attacking a ball in the air.
  • Other information: Austin is adding to the career receiving yard record as he passed Tom Jeffers record early in the season. Austin is also closing in on a couple other of Jeffers’s records as he is 3 receiving touchdowns away from breaking the all-time receiving touchdown record as well 103 yards away from breaking the single-season receiving yard record.

South Dearborn’s Ethan Getz

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Football
  • Athlete’s year/position: Senior Wide Receiver
  • Submitted by: Ryan D. Walston
  • Submitter’s position: Athletic Director
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: In last Friday’s game, Ethan scored 3 touchdowns breaking South Dearborn’s school record for most receiving TDs in a season. The record was 8 (set in 2003) and he now has 9.

East Central’s Molly Gregg

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Volleyball
  • Athlete’s year/position: Junior Setter/Outside Hitter
  • Submitted by: Cassie Laker
  • Submitter’s position: Head Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: Molly continues to control our offense in every skill. Last week she was 48/52 serving with 10 aces. She went 147/148 setting with 57 assists. Molly also contributed on the attack going 66/67 with 25 kills. Defensively, she added 28 digs in the back court and one block at the net. Additionally, Molly was served 23 times without an error on reception.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: Molly continues to work hard and puts everything she has into a game. She finds a way to play balls that others would let hit the floor. Molly scrambles better than anyone else on our team and continues to pull the other team’s momentum away in the process.

Batesville’s Hattie Westerfeld

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Volleyball
  • Athlete’s year/position: Senior Middle Hitter
  • Submitted by: Jody A Thomas
  • Submitter’s position: Co-Head Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: We had a light schedule last week but Hattie made it a highlight reel. She literally won a set worth of points in an EIAC match against Franklin County with 4 aces, 22 kills, 2 blocks and one assist. She hit .528 on the night and became the first player to have a 20+ kill match since Batesville’s former all-state player Bailey Baumer.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: Hattie is an tall aggressive athelete who brings overwhelming power and drive to the team. She can change the outcome of the game.
  • Other information: Hattie is a talented basketball player who will continue after Batesville as a Division 1 student athlete at Indiana State.

Milan’s Dakota Sams

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Football
  • Athlete’s year/position: Junior Linebacker and Offensive Guard
  • Submitted by: Ryan Langferman
  • Submitter’s position: Head Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: In Friday night’s MIFC victory over Oldenburg, Dakota recorded 12 tackles, 3 of which were for a loss. He also graded out as our highest offensive lineman at 92%.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: Dakota is a captain of the team and outstanding leader. He loves the game of football and is a true student of the game.

Rising Sun’s Landon Cole

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Boys Soccer
  • Athlete’s year/position: Midfielder
  • Submitted by: Robert Kelnhofer
  • Submitter’s position: Head Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: Landon had 4 goals in 2 games last week to finish with 17 goals for the regular season along with 9 assists.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: Landon controls the middle of the field for our team and gets the offense going.

Jac-Cen-Del’s Shaylee Volz

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Volleyball
  • Athlete’s year/position: Sophomore
  • Submitted by: Cat Schmeltz
  • Submitter’s position: Head Volleyball Coach
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: Last week stats for Shaylee included: 52/64 attacks with 18 kills, 10 blocks, 6/7 setting, 10 digs, 16/21 serving with 4 aces and 31/34 serve receive.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: Shaylee has fought back from an early injury to be one of our leaders. She works hard in practice and games to get better and to help make our team better. Shaylee has a huge passion for volleyball.  With only being a sophomore, she still has a lot of time to improve and make an impact.

Milan’s Courtney Bruns

  • Level/Sport: Varsity Volleyball
  • Athlete’s year/position: Senior Libero
  • Submitted by: Danessa Mortenson
  • Submitter’s position: Varsity Volleyball
  • Athlete’s accomplishments: Last week, Courtney had 90% passing and 50 digs.
  • Submitter’s personal comments: Courtney’s leadership in the back row has kept our team moving forward and winning tight matches all season long. Her consistent tempo on freeballs and excellent ability to read the other side of the net keeps her playing in position when facing tough opponents. She’s made many incredible plays this past season that have been momentum changers for the Indians’ offense. Most often on the volleyball court, the “unsung” hero is the defensive player with the competitive attitude to give it her all in every play. Courtney is the best example of this!
