Readers’ favorite high school games & individual performances- Part 12

With the spring sports season canceled due to the coronavirus, we asked our audience to provide us with some of their favorite memorable high school games or individual performances there were part of as a player, coach or fan. Here are some of those shared memories. More installments will be coming.

Kenny Getz, Oldenburg Boys Soccer- People ask me why I coach.  I really can’t give you one answer, but here is one I can give you.  One of our captains, Noah Schmahl received Exemplary Behavior Recognition from the Oldenburg vs. Canterbury match from September 28, 2019.

Here is the unedited IHSAA report filed by Kevin Vanden Akker, Assistant Athletic Director of Canterbury School.

It was a 0-0 game and one of our (Canterbury) players tripped an Oldenburg player right at the top of our penalty area. The official called for the ball placement to be just outside the box; which a number of Oldenburg fans thought was wrong – that it should be a penalty instead …and loudly voiced their opinion.

Noah Schamahl, who was in front of the spectator stands, took control of the situation and motioned for his supporters to be quiet by outstretching his arms and motioning for the crowd to calm down; which they did. He showed exemplary behavior and leadership in a situation that could have been advantageous for his team by having a PK called.

In speaking to him afterwards, he said that as a captain, that was just what he was supposed to do…but I have seen many a captain behave in not so exemplary behavior in situations like that. That response shows a spirit of humbleness in his leadership as well. Well done Noah, and all those involved in molding leadership in young men at Oldenburg. Perhaps fitting, but Oldenburg scored on that free kick which proved to be the game winner.
