Readers’ favorite high school games & individual performances – Part 10

With the spring sports season canceled due to the coronavirus, we asked our audience to provide us with some of their favorite memorable high school games or individual performances there were part of as a player, coach or fan.   Here are some of those shared memories.  More installments will be coming.

Steve Giesting- In my years of doing the PA at South Dearborn and calling games for SEI Local Sports, I have had the opportunity to witness many great games and individual performances.  But the game that will always stand out to me was the North Decatur vs. Switzerland County boys sectional semifinal in 2018.

Switzerland County led by three at the half.  The second half was incredible.  North’s Cameron Adams took over as he scored all 15 points in the fourth quarter for ND.  Kyle Whitham hit a short jumper to tie the game at 51 with seconds left to play, forcing overtime.

In the OT, Whitham hit a short field goal to put the Pacers ahead 59-58.  ND took a timeout to draw up a final play.  It resulted in two free throws for Tyler Walterman.  He calmly sank both to put the Chargers ahead 60-59 with 2.2 seconds left.

The Pacers’ Austin South took the inbounds pass, took one dribble and let fly from 70 feet away.  The ball hit nothing but the bottom of the net to send the Pacers to the finals.

We had transmission trouble and lost the live signal for the last few minutes of the game.   I remember walking out of the gym and telling my webcast partner Brad Fentress, I cannot remember what I said on the shot.  I had to wait until the replay hit that mark at around 2:00 am to hear my call.

It was great to hear Bryce in the background saying, “Oh my God!” as neither of us could really quite believe what we had just seen.  I have seen others say they have not had a chance to call a buzzer beater in their broadcast careers and I am fortunate to have had a chance to call a few, but this will always be the one to stand out in my mind.

Editor’s addition: The game was played March 2, 2018.  Click on this link for our archived video webcast.
