Readers’ favorite high school games & individual performances – Part 9

With the spring sports season canceled due to the coronavirus, we asked our audience to provide us with some of their favorite memorable high school games or individual performances there were part of as a player, coach or fan.   Here are some of those shared memories.  More installments will be coming.

Dan Hambrick- This is one of those great come back, great collapse stories.  It goes back to February 1996 when I coached the Shawe Lady Hilltoppers for six seasons.

We were at Rising Sun and were down seven points with 35 seconds to go.  Our point guard comes down and barely crosses mid court and gets trapped.  Instead of trying to pass the ball or call timeout, she slings a 25-foot shot up and banks in a three.  I called timeout basically because I was in shock and didn’t know what to say or do.  Rising Sun gets the ball back and turns the ball over on a traveling call.

We come back down and, this time, run a play to our shooting guard who has already hit seven, three pointers that game and we run a set to perfection and she hits a baseline three.  We are now down one with 15 seconds to go.

Rising Sun gets the ball in, we trap immediately and get a jump called. The possession arrow is in our favor.  We now have the ball with seven seconds to go and my girls do me proud and run our last second shot to a T. We get a wide open layup and win at the buzzer by one.

One week later we are at Switzerland County, we are up by 10 with one minute to go and lose. I won’t go into details on that collapse.
