Readers’ favorite high school games & individual performances – Part 4

With the spring sports season on hold due to the coronavirus, we asked our audience to provide us with some of their favorite memorable high school games or individual performances there were part of as a player, coach or fan.   Here are some of those shared memories.  More installments will be coming.

Ken Getz- In 2010, our Oldenburg Academy boys soccer team was playing Switzerland County.  Derek, my son, intercepted the ball from the center mid position, turned, looked up and saw a streaking Kirk Siegel.  Derek lofted a pass that Kirk never saw coming.  Derek hit Kirk in the head on a dead run the ball ricocheted off his head right into the back of the net.

Here is the YouTube link to the goal that nobody saw coming link   Derek and Kirk did this quite often. Derek is still our all-time leader in assists and Kirk is third in goals.

Kristie West- The Greensburg vs East Central volleyball game on October 10, 2019 is a memorable game for me. The 3A Pirates defeated 4A conference rival East Central 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 28-26).   This victory earned Greensburg its first outright conference championship title since 2001.

Also during this match, Junior Anna West reached the 1000 career kill milestone.  Greensburg finished the volleyball season with a record of 27-2. This is the best winning percentage in school history.

Tully Anderson- My most favorite moment of the girls high school soccer season has to be beating Rising Sun in a sectional semifinal nail biter, 2-1. Raylinn Kappes scored in the first 2 minutes of the game for us. However Rising Sun’s defense clamped down and held us scoreless. They scored before the half to tie. With less than 6 minutes to play, Matty Anderson scored to send us in to our second straight sectional finals game.
