Jefferson County- Madison and Southwestern will travel up to the Jennings County Wrestling Sectional for the first leg of the IHSAA State Tournament.
Both squads have enjoyed successful seasons whether it be the individual accolades of the Rebels’ lightweight wrestlers or the team success of the Madison Cubs. Both coaches are looking for continued success as the tourney begins.
Madison will take a young team to North Vernon with underclassman filling nine of their 13 classes.
If the seven Cubs who are seeded amonng the top four in their respective weight classes hold their seeding, Madison could have a healthy contingency moving on to regionals. The top four finishers advance in each weight class.
While Madison didn’t earn any top seeds, sophomore Mitchell Sandlin at 170 (pounds) and senior Zach Adams at 152 are slotted second.
Those listed as a three seed are freshmen Trenton Dempler at 113, Chayce Young at 120, sophomore Jordan Partee at 145 and senior Ryan Fish at 182.
Senior Cody Banks at heavyweight heads to the sectional as a fourth seed.
“We have been a better dual meet team than a tourney team this year but we got some decent seeds,” said Madison coach Tyson Skinner. “Now it falls on the guys to step up and earn the seed they were given or to improve on it.”
Other seeded wrestlers for Madison are (all six seeds): sophomore Tucker Robinson at 106, freshman Conner Livingston at 126, freshman Tanner Young at 160 and senior Matt Stokes at 195.
