East Central’s 31-win season ends at 4A Sectional 14 Semis

Bloomington- For a second consecutive year, a 31-win season for East Central came to end during the Class 4A Sectional 14 tournament semifinals.

In 2017, the Lady Trojans faced both Bloomington schools in Columbus, defeating North but losing to South.  In 2018, EC took on both Columbus schools in Bloomington, beating East but losing to North.

Coach Cassie Lakers’ Trojans finish 2018 with a 31-3 record (best winning percentage in program history) and as EIAC champions for a third straight year.

In Thursday’s opening round match with Columbus East, the Lady Trojans came from two sets down to win 3-2:  21-25, 19-25, 25-19, 25-15 and 15-11.  It was the first time East Central has ever beaten Columbus East in volleyball.

East Central’s Cassie Laker- “It was a great game all the way around. The first set went point-for-point until Columbus East hit 20 points and then they just finished the job. In set two, we found ourselves up with about a 10-point lead but just couldn’t finish. We played safe toward the end and it cost us.”

“But I’ve been saying it all year, these girls are resilient. They do not want to lose and will continue to risk everything to ensure that doesn’t happen. They bounced back and took control of the next three sets without letting up. It was a very solid team game. Everyone contributed and every left it all on the court.”

“We pushed hard with our serve and it was backed up with great defense and a strong offense. Our block did a great job at slowing the ball down so our defense had time to react and get to the ball. Our sectional is always extremely tough, so this was a good first win for us. It doesn’t get easier from here though. We have to continue to play our game at the highest level.”
