Greensburg 3, Rushville 1- 3A-29 Sectional Round 1

Batesville- At Thursday’s 3A-29 Volleyball Sectional in Batesville, Greensburg recorded its 20th win of the season.  The Lady Pirates defeated Rushville 3-1 in round one.  Final scores were 25-8, 19-25, 25-8 and 25-12.

Greensburg got off to a quick start in game one, scoring eight of the game’s first nine points.  After a kill by Rushville’s Kourtney Ash, Greensburg scored the game’s next four points to go up 12-2.  A kill by the Lions’ Viktoria Campbell made it 17-8, but the Pirates posted the final eight points to win the set 25-8.  Mary West had three kills as part of the run while sister Anna added two on the game’s final 2 points.  Each of the West’s finished the opening stanza (unofficially) with four kills.

Game two saw the two clubs record nine ties early on.  The last tie was 10-10 before Rushville scored four straight points to take the set’s first notable lead.  Macy Hoeing had a kill and Jama Barnes notched an ace for the Lions as part of the run.  Rushville was up 18-15 when the Lions went on another 4-0 spurt to build a seven-point advantage, 22-15.  Brittany Kuhn had back-to-back-to-back hammers in the flurry.  Greensburg got as close as 22-18 before Rushville was able to close things out.  A hammer by Hoeing capped the Lions’ 25-19 victory.  It was one of five kills for Hoeing in the set.  Anna West had six for Greensburg.

The Pirates returned to their earlier form from game one and bolted to an 8-2 lead in game three.  Anna and Mary West each had a pair of kills for Greensburg to give the Lady Bucks some momentum.   After the Lions called a timeout, Rushville scored four consecutive points to close within two.  But the Pirates took control of the game, outscoring Rushville 17-2 over the rest of the game, including the set’s final 11 points, to win it 25-8.  Aliyah Evans had a big game at the net for Greensburg recording seven kills.

The fourth and final frame was tied 8-8 before Greensburg started to pull away.  The Pirates carded four consecutive points and 11 of the next 12 to go up 19-9.  The Wests combined for five kills and split a block.  Greensburg later closed out the match by logging six of the final seven set points to win game four, 25-12, and take the match 3-1.
