Coaches comments follow.

East Central’s Cassie Laker- “We went 3-0 in pool play against Jay County (2-0), Shenandoah (2-1) and Alexandria (2-0) and then defeated Lawrenceburg in the championship (2-1) to win the UC Tournament for the second consecutive year.”

“As a coach, all I hope is that we progress through the season and play our best volleyball heading into the post season. We seemed to be in a bit of a slump there the last week or so of the season, so I was concerned how we would play coming into this tournament. With this tournament, we played 7 matches in 5 days, so I was afraid we would be extra tired. They proved me wrong in every aspect.”

“Jay County was one of the tallest teams we’ve seen all year, so we knew we’d have to pass well to run a quick offense and try to keep our hitters 1 on 1 with their blockers. Our back court did a great job at keeping us in system and our servers did great at keeping them out of system.”

“Shenandoah gave us a big test. They were resilient and refused to quit. They had a bit of a chip on their shoulder from last year where the result was very similar to this year- extra points in the final set. We held our composure and still performed aggressively under pressure.”

“The win over Alexandria was a direct result of our serving. We moved the ball very well and they were constantly trying to guess what was coming next. Because of that, we received a lot of free balls and roll shots which allowed our offense to do their thing.”

“The championship over Lawrenceburg was what everyone expects when conference rivals compete. We took over in set three, again with our serving, and it paid off. The girls have gotten more comfortable taking risks with our serve and we are scoring points because of it. It kept them out of system which is all we ask from our servers.”

“We finished the season 30-2 (13-1 in EIAC) as we head into the post season. Our first sectional game is Thursday at 6pm at Bloomington South against Columbus East.”

We thank coach Cassie Laker of East Central and Staci Knigga of Lawrenceburg for the match reports.
