East Central 3, Greensburg 1; JV Pirates 2-0

Greensburg- The East Central Lady Trojans clinched their third consecutive EIAC volleyball crown Thursday, defeating the Greensburg Lady Pirates 3-1. The game scores were 23-25, 25-16, 25-23 and 25-22. EC finished the conference season with a 13-1 conference record. Greensburg finished 8-6.

The first game was a tight back and forth affair with 13 ties and 11 lead changes. Greensburg took its biggest lead of the opening set, 5-2, after scoring four consecutive points.  The Trojans led by as much as two, 21-19, after a 5-1 run. With EC ahead 23-22, Greensburg scored the final three points of the game, the last two coming on kills by Mary West, to win 25-23.  West finished the game with 6 kills while Molly Gregg did likewise for the Trojans.

East Central took command early in game two and never looked back. Five different Trojans had three or more kills led by leading hitter Mack Ewing with four. EC led by as much as 11, 24-13.  After three straight points by Greensburg, Ewing recorded the game’s final point on a hammer as the Trojans won 25-16 to even the match at a game apiece.

The St. Leon ladies jumped out to a 9-4 lead in game three. Greensburg rallied with nine consecutive points to go up 11-9.  Aliyah Evans was a force at the net for the Pirates, recording three kills and a pair of blocks. EC never flinched as the Trojans scored nine of the next 12 points to retake the lead, 18-14. Bailey Grunkemeyer had a pair of aces for the Trojans in the flurry.  The host Lady Bucs outscored the visitors 8-4 to tie the set a fourth time at 22-22.  EC then scored three of the final four points and ended the 25-23 victory on a kill by Grunkemeyer.  For the Trojans, Grunkemeyer had two kills and two aces while Gregg added a pair of aces.  For the Pirates, Mary West posted seven kills while Evans added four kills and a pair of blocks.

The Trojans looked to close things out in game four. Greensburg did not go away quietly, however. The Pirates went on a 6-1 run, with three kills by Evans, to lead 10-6. East Central then scored nine straight points to take their largest lead of the game at 15-10. The string of points included two aces by Gregg, three kills from Grunkemeyer and two putaways by Alicia Rosemeyer.
