Rising Sun 11, North Decatur 1

The following is an unedited varsity softball report from Rising Sun Athletics.  We thank them for the report.

With a light yet steady rain falling throughout Saturday’s doubleheader with North Decatur, the Lady Shiners defeated the visiting Chargers in game one, 11-1, in five innings. RS took advantage of five consecutive walks in its first at bat and held a 4-0 lead after the opening inning.

Junior Abby Wallace notched two of the team’s five hits and also batted in a pair of runs. Sophomore Kassidy Romans hit a bases load triple for 3-RBI. Freshman Lindsay Montgomery knocked in a pair of runs while classmate Tyrrah Miller logged the team’s only other hit. Sophomore Sydney Pitts went the distance with seven strikeouts. Senior Caroline Stapleton made two very nice catches in center.

“We were given a gift to start the game and took full advantage of that,” said coach Bryce Kendrick referencing early Charger walks which set the table for the four-run first inning. “We were walked 13 times overall which is mostly why we only had five hits. I highly doubt we will see that many walks when we face them again in the first round of the sectional. Hopefully, we’ll continue to put good pitches in play and replace those walks with hits.”

The teams broke for lunch while the rain continued to fall after game one. The second game was called by the umpires after 1-1/2 innings due to safety concerns with a very slick and deteriorating infield.
