Batesville 9, Rising Sun 6; Bulldog JV 18-1

The following is an unedited varsity softball report from Batesville coach Randy Obermeyer:

The Batesville Lady Bulldog softball team defeated the Shiners of Rising Sun last night at home by a score of 9-6.

The Bulldogs got up early with 2 runs in the first inning, after holding the Shiners to no runs in the top of the inning. A line drive single by Obermeyer scored Huffner from 3rd, then after a hit by Oldham, pushing Obermeyer to 3rd, Obermeyer scored on a wild pitch.

The Shiners were held scoreless again in the second, third, and fourth innings while the Bulldogs stacked on 3 more runs. The first two came off a line drive double by Huffner to score Wilson and Main who was running for Cornn in the 2nd inning. With 2 outs and a runner on 1st and 3rd, Obermeyer singled again to score Huffner.

The Bulldogs were held scoreless through the 5th inning. While the Shiners scored 6 in the 5th off two walks, two errors, and 5 hits.

The Bulldogs scored 3 in the sixth inning. The 1st came as Cornn scored on the throw to 1st as Burkhart reached 1st on a dropped third strike. Then Burkhart scored on a passed ball. Oldham scored as Garcia reached 1st on an error by the Shiners.

Westerfeld held the Shiners scoreless in the 7th inning with a strike out and two ground outs.

Obermeyer led the team pitching with 6 strikeouts in 4 and 2/3 innings. Westerfeld finished with 3 strikeouts.

Obermeyer and Huffner both finished the game with 2 RBIs each, while Oldham finished with 1. Obermeyer, Huffner, Oldham, and Wilson all ended with 2 hits each. Both of Huffner’s hits were doubles. Burkhart, Waechter, Garcia, and Cornn ended with 1 hit each.

Cornn led the defense with 9 putouts, while Wilson finished with 7.

This was a great win for the Bulldogs, after being held to just 5 runs in the past two games while giving up 27. The hitting game really turned on for us last night. They never got down on themselves after giving up the lead in the 5th inning which would have been easy to do. They battled back and took advantage of a couple mistakes in the 6th inning and capitalized on them.
