Milan 5, Southwestern 4- Indians win Sectional 45

Vevay- A four-run, fourth inning proved to be the difference in Milan’s 5-4 2A Sectional 45 championship victory over Southwestern on Friday at Switzerland County.  The Lady Indians avenged their 3-2, 13-inning loss to the Lady Rebels from the 2016 finals.

While the 2017 title tilt was not a repeat of the marathon from a year ago, it was the only game in Sectional 45 that went seven innings and it was a good one.

After giving up a leadoff single to Abby Ralston, Milan’s Lexi Wert retired the next six Rebels in order.  Southwestern’s Kelsi Brierly saw and sat down six Indians during her first two innings of work.

Both teams touched home once in the third frame.  Wert singled past a diving Meagan Ralston and stole second base.  With two outs, Abby Yelton doubled off the glove of a diving Kayla Adkins along the left field line.  Wert scored.  Catcher Michaela Mahoney later gunned down Yelton trying to swipe third.

Southwestern also scored with two outs during the home third.  Abby Ralston reached on a slap single back to the circle and stole second.  Meagan Ralston reached on an infield error which also allowed sister Abby to score from second.

The Indians broke the 1-1 tie in a big way during the fourth.  Taylor Amberger doubled and Taryn Cline singled with one out.  Following a ground ball which resulted in the second out, Sierra Kern walked to load the bases.  What followed was a pair of 2-RBI doubles by Jordan Healy and Wert.  It was now 5-1 Tribe.

Brierly allowed only one Indian to reach base the rest of the game and that was Wert who collected her third hit and second stolen base in the seventh.
