Madison 3, South Dearborn 1; 3A Sectional 29- Round 1

The following is an unedited report from Steve Giesting for our live webcast of this event.

The Madison Lady Cubs advanced past South Dearborn 3 – 1 in the opening round of the class 3A Softball Sectional 29 on Monday.  Alexis Wolf earned the victory for Madison with a complete game, allowing only 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 8.  With the win, Madison improves to 11 – 11 on the season and advances to Thursday night’s semifinals where they will take on Rushville.  The Lions beat Batesville 10 – 1 in the opening game on Monday.

This game was seen live as part of our spring sports schedule and can be seen again in our archives by clicking here.

The Lady Knights had a chance to score early in the top of the first.  With one out, Hannah Lunsford reached on a bunt single and stole 2nd.  Cameron Hoskins reached on an error and Lunsford and Hoskins pulled off a double steal to put 2 runners in scoring position.  Wolf buckled down and got a pop out and a strikeout to end the Knight threat.

The game was a pitcher’s dual between Wolf and SD’s Graci Cornett through the first 3 innings.  After Wolf struck out the side in the top of the 2nd, Cornett matched her in the bottom of the 2nd.

Madison broke through in the bottom of the 3rd inning.  Cornett retired the first 2 batters of the inning before giving up a walk to Bailey Dyer.  Dyer stole 2nd before Wolf reached on an error to put runners on the corners.  Amilia Hall got Dyer home to give the Cubs a 1 – 0 lead.  Emma Cammack then singled to right center to plater Wolf and Hall and put Madison up 3 – 0.

South Dearborn got one of the runs back in the top of the 4th.  Cornett walked to open the inning.  She moved to 2nd on a fielders choice by Bry LaGreca who reached safely on the play.  Reagan Willoughby then reached on an error that allowed Cornett to score to make it 3 – 1 Madison.  After Shayna Wood reached to load the bases, Wolf got out of the jam when Maddie Lee lined to first base.  Nettie Eigel snared the line drive and stepped on first to double off Wood and end the inning.
