Rushville 10, Batesville 1; 3A Sectional 29- Round 1

The following is an unedited report from Steve Giesting for our webcast of this event.

The Rushville Lady Lions defeated Batesville 10 – 1 on Monday to open play in the class 3A softball sectional at Madison.  Adrian Marquez and Kiley Cook each drove in 3 runs for the Lions who advance to Thursday’s semifinal where they will play Madison.   The Lady Cubs defeated South Dearborn 3 – 1 in the second game on Monday night.

This game was seen live as part of our spring sports schedule and can be seen again in our archives by clicking here.

Rushville got the scoring under way in the top of the first inning.  Caraline Gettinger and Betsy Muir had back to back singles to open the game.  A passed ball moved them both into scoring position.  McKenzie Colestock, courtesy running for Gettinger, scored on a fielders choice ground out by Adrian Marquez and Muir scored on a fielders choice ground out by Kiley Cook.  It was 2 – 0 Lions after the first inning.

Rushville added on another run in the top of the 2nd inning.  Becky Muir led off the inning and reached on a Bulldog error.  Maddie Kuhn got her home with a single over the first base bag to give the Lions an early 3 – 0 lead.

Meanwhile, Gettinger was taking care of business in the pitching circle.  She allowed a 2-out double to Kara Obermeyer in the first and a single by Ellie Waechter in the 2nd but stranded both runners.

Rushville would score again in the top of the 4th.  With one out, Zoey Clemons, Olivia Vance, and Gettinger singled to load the bases.  After a pop out for the 2nd out of the inning, Marquez singled to score Clemons and Vance to make it a 5 – 0 Lion lead.

Batesville got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 5th.  Sierra Corn led off the inning with a walk, the only walk of the game given up by Gettinger.  She was sacrificed into scoring position and scored on a 2-out single by Kelsey Huffner to make it a 5 – 1 game.
