Rising Sun 1, Jac-Cen-Del 0

The following is an unedited report filed by Steve Giesting for our live webcast of this event.

The Rising Sun Lady Shiners got a complete game shutout by Sydney Pitts to defeat Jac-Cen-Del 1 – 0 on Wednesday night.  With the victory, Rising Sun evened their record at 12 – 12 on the season and clinched 3rd place in the ORVC with an 8 – 4 record.

This game was seen live as part of our spring sports schedule and can be seen in our archives by clicking here.

Pitts did her finest work in the top of the first inning for Rising Sun.  Emily Adams opened the game for Jac-Cen-Del with a double and moved to 3rd on a fielder’s choice by Kayla Bowling who also reached on a Shiner error on the play.  That brought up Morgan Carroll, the ORVC’s leading hitter at .682 with a conference best 5 homers.  She walked on 4 pitches to load the bases with nobody out.

Pitts did not cave as she got a strikeout, an infield pop out, and another strikeout to end the inning and leave the bases loaded.

For Jac-Cen-Del, Morgan Carroll was mowing down the Shiners the first time through the line-up.  She retired 10 of the first 11 batters including 8 in a row.  The only base runner for Rising Sun was Baylie Hunter who reached on an Eagle throwing error in the bottom of the first inning.

Rising Sun got things going in the bottom of the fourth inning.  With one out, Hunter doubled to left field to get into scoring position with only 1 out.  Kassidy Romans came in to pinch run for Hunter and moved to 3rd on a passed ball.  After getting an infield pop out for the 2nd out of the inning, Carroll was one strike away from getting out of the inning.

Down 0 – 2 in the count, Kyla Willhite fouled off several pitches to remain alive before hitting a grounder just to the right of the mound.  She beat the throw to first as Romans scored to put Rising Sun up 1 – 0.

Jac-Cen-Del’s best chance to tie the game came in the top of the 5th.  With one out, Adams doubled for the 2nd time in the game.  She would move to 3rd on a flyout to right by Bowling.  After Carroll walked for the 2nd time in the game to put runners on the corners, Pitts got a flyout to right to end the inning and the Eagle threat.

Rising Sun looked to add on an insurance run in the bottom of the 6th.  With one out, Sydney Bostic singled.  Emma Levi came in as a courtesy runner and went first to third on a single by Hunter, who took 2nd on the throw to 3rd to put 2 runners in scoring position.  Carroll didn’t flinch as she got a strikeout for the 2nd out and then a ground out to 3rd to end the Shiner threat and keep the Eagles deficit at 1 heading into their final at bat.

With 2 outs in the top of the 7th inning, Kayla Bowling beat out an infield single to put the tying run on base for Carroll.  She walked to move the tying run into scoring position before Pitts got her 5th and final strikeout of the game to end it.

Sydney Pitts earned the Whitewater Motor Company player of the game honors.  The freshmen lefty picked up her 7th win of the season, throwing a 6 hit shutout.  She struck out 5 Eagles while walking only 3.

Morgan Carroll took the hard luck loss for Jac-Cen-Del.  She allowed only 1 earned run on 4 hits while striking out 9 without any walks.
