Indianapolis- The fifth ranked Indianapolis Lutheran Lady Saints sent the top ranked Rising Sun Lady Shiners marching home Tuesday as Lutheran defeated RS in the Class 1A Regional 30, 11-5.
The loss ends Rising Sun’s stellar season with six more wins and two fewer losses than the 2011 squad. However, this 27-2 team in 2012 fell one level of the tournament shy of last season’s semi-state qualifying 21-4 team. It was, without question, an incredible year for Rising Sun but one that will be bittersweet as those in the RS camp can only now imagine what might have been.
Lutheran was known for two things going into the game- the ability to hit and pull the ball hard and the ability to play small ball. Both were prominently on display Tuesday. The Saints also got some help in padding their lead in the sixth as four runs were scored on three errors.
Rising Sun left two runners on in the top of the first as it was able to draw two of five walks in the game allowed by winning pitcher Anna Phillippe. The inning ended when Taylor Mullen’s sharply hit ground ball to third was stopped by a diving Emily Snow who then was able to reach up and tag an advancing Ali Bostic on the ankle.
Lutheran scored one in the home first. Jonni Nowakoski opened with a single to left. She was nearly doubled up at first as the Shiners’ Kendra Hudson picked off a lined sacrifice bunt attempt. Nowakoski got back to the bag just in time.
