Batesville- South Dearborn continued its strong run against conference opponents Thursday as the Lady Knights defeated the Lady Bulldogs of Batesville 8-2. It was a successful Sectional 29 title defense for SD.
Knights’ pitcher Kooper Vertz held the Dogs to just two hits, a single and a triple by Meg Liter. Vertz fanned 12 batters and walked three.
Both runs allowed by Vertz came in the first. Katie Thomas walked and was sacrificed to second by Sam Miller. Meg Liter tripled to plate Thomas then also scored to give BHS a 2-0 lead.
SD tied the game in the second. Vertz singled and Bugni put down a sacrifice bunt but reached on an error. Ashleigh Largent, running for Vertz and Bugni both scored on a passed ball to make it a 2-2 game.
The Knights went up 4-2 in the fourth. Margo Tedesco singled and was sacrificed to second by Vertz. Bugni added a hit to put a pair of runners on. Delaney Murphy’s RBI single plated Tedesco and Bugni crossed for a second time in the game on a passed ball.
Two more runs were posted by the Knights in the fifth. Morgan Wolfer singled and was sacrificed to second by Jessica Benton. Tedesco hit a two out single then Vertz launched a two bagger that scored both players in front of her to make it 6-2 Knights.
