Lapel wins South Dearborn Invitational

The following is an unedited varsity girls tennis report from South Dearborn report Jason Krause.  We thank him for the report.

South Dearborn Invitational team results:
Lapel High School 1
Jennings County High School 2
South Dearborn High School 3
Lawrenceburg High School 4

The South Dearborn Invitational saw great tennis matches throughout the day. With the Round Robin format; South Dearborn and Lawrenceburg squared off in the first round Friday night with the Knights winnings 4-1. Saturday morning saw South Dearborn face Jennings County, while Lapel faced Lawrenceburg. Jennings County and Lapel won 4-1 and 5-0 respectfully. The next round found the host Knights take on the Bulldogs of Lapel, with Lapel taking the match 4-1, Jennings County defeated Lawrenceburg 4-1. The final round of the South Dearborn Invitational between Jennings County and Lapel would also determine the champion. The Bulldogs of Lapel came away with a 3-2 victory after a two hour match and their third South Dearborn Invitational trophy.
The Knights first round match up against Lawrenceburg, saw a hard fought match at all of the positions. Number one singles player Madison Fentress fended off Averi McMullen 7-5 in the first set before controlling the second set 6-1. Number two singles player Sydney Yoe took the momentum early and defeated Katy Wyly 6-2, 6-2. Number three singles player Ashley Stevenson played well against Olivia Lamb and won 6-3, 6-3. Number 1 doubles team of Brooklyn Cromer and Emily Seward battled Gracie Safaviyan and Destiny Golden. The Knights’ duo took the first set 6-2, dropped the second set 1-6, and instead of playing a full third set, the rules stated a super tiebreak (first to 10 points) would take place. The duo found themselves down 4-8, before rallying to a 12-10 victory. Number two doubles team of Lacey Horn and Danielle Martini were defeated 2-6, 1-6.

The Knights’ second round match up against Jennings County saw good points across the board but Jennings County had SD’s number as number one singles Madison Fentress scored the only team point winning 6-0, 6-0 against Carmen Kopitzke. Sydney Yoe lost 2-6, 1-6 against Hailey Brown at two singles. Three singles player Ashley Stevenson lost 3-6, 0-6 against Ellie Hearne. Doubles team of Brooklyn Cromer and Emily Seward lost 1-6, 0-6 against Callie Wilder and Maddy Hill at number one. Number two doubles team of Lacey Horn and Danielle Martini lost 0-6, 2-6 against Abigail DeCamp and Courtney Lykins.
