Greensburg wins Scott County Invitational

The following is an unedited girls varsity tennis report from Greensburg coach Gary Bailey.  We thank him for the report.

Scottsburg Invitational on Friday evening with a clash with Eastern High School (Pekin). The Lady Pirates came away with a shaky 3-2 win.
#1 Singles: Raegan Rigney def. Shelbi Patton 4-6, 6-0, 6-1
#2 Singles: Bailey Menkedick lost to Kaleigh Earhart 6-4, 6-2
#3 Singles: Ellie Acra lost to Jenna Chastain 6-3, 6-3
#1 Doubles: Kirsten Fong/Claudia Westhafer def. Graham/Smith 6-4, 6-2
#2 Doubles: Sarah Schneider/Aliyah Evans def. Whitfield/Huizar 6-2, 6-3
Aliyah Evans, playing in her first Varsity match did a nice job with Sarah at #2 Doubles. They got the clinching 3rd point we needed to win the match.

The Lady Pirates won the 2018 Scott County Girls Tennis Invitational on Sat. After defeating Eastern (Pekin) on Friday. Greensburg faced Lanesville in the Semi-Finals on Sat. morning. At #1 Singles, Raegan Rigney defeated Hailee Parsons 6-2, 6-1. At #2 Singles, Bailey Menkedick def. Emma Peele 6-1, 6-4. At #3, Ellie Acra battled through a long 3-set match to win over Emily Patterson 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. At #1 Doubles, Kirsten Fong/Claudia Westhafer def. Morgan Watson/Jadyn Bradford 6-1, 7-5. #2 Doubles saw Sarah Schneider/Emma Nobbe come up just short against Morgan Bell/Elizabeth Turner 6-1, 6-7 (11), 1-0 (3).

In the Finals, the Lady Pirates faced the host Scottsburg Lady Warriors. The match got off to a great start for Greensburg as Raegan Rigney and Bailey Menkedick both won quickly at #1 Singles and #2 Singles. Rigney got past Megan Johnson 6-0, 6-2, and Menkedick def. Hannah Brown 6-0, 6-0. From that point however, the match took on all the trimmings of a final match-up. At #3 Singles, Ellie Acra faced a much more rested player in Lyla Waskom and Acra I think simply ran out of gas in a 7-5, 6-1 loss. At #1 Doubles, Kirsten Fong/Claudia Westhafer came up short against Leah Hunefeld/Eliza Mount 6-4, 6-4.

“The Scottsburg doubles team at #1 was by far the best team we have seen this year and Kirsten/Claudia battled very well against them. We played well but just came up a little short”, said Coach Bailey.

The match and the title would come down to #2 Doubles where Sarah Schneider/Emma Nobbe faced Kinley Harmon/Lindsey Pfaffenbach. In the first set, Schneider/Nobbe jumped out and won 6-3. Scottsburg turned the tables in set #2 winning 6-3. It would come down to one set. Neither team could pull away from the other in the first 7 games but the Lady Pirates broke through to take a 5-3 lead on some good play at the net. After dropping game #9, the Pirate duo played a solid game to close out the win and claim the title 6-4.

“We called Emma Nobbe at about 10pm on Firday and told her we needed her to play on Sat. morning. I could not be more pleased with the way she stepped up. She was in a real pressure spot and really came through for us!”, said Coach Bailey.
