Franklin County wins Shelbyville Round Robin

The following is an unedited girls varsity tennis report from Franklin County’s Braydon Ertel.  We thank him for the report.

On Saturday, April 21, the Franklin County Girls Tennis team competed in the Shelbyville Invitational. The invitational consisted of 4 teams in a round robin format.

To begin the tournament, Franklin County played the host school Shelbyville. All singles players for Franklin County were able to advance with comfortable victories. Only four total games were lost combined between the three players. The #2 doubles of Maggie Brack and Taylor McCreary were able to grind out a 6-3, 6-0 victory. At #1 Doubles, Grace Moster and Katarina Sacksteder fell to their opponents 2-6 4-6. The team finished with a 4-1 win in their first match.

After a 30 minute break, the team began their second match against the Seymour Owls. Getting points for their team quickly were singles players Megan Routh and Lauren Klei who lost only one game between the two. Lilli Stewart followed suit with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Both doubles matches remained before the match could be completed. The #1 doubles duo lost in a tight match 6-7(4), 4-6. The #2 doubles weren’t able to get the win either as they lost 2-6, 3-6. Although both doubles failed to get victories, the team was able to get a slim 3-2 victory to raise their record to 2-0 in the tournament.

To conclude the day, Franklin County battled against Triton Central. Both teams knew they needed to stay motivated and use all the energy they had in their third match of the day. Fortunately, all singles players for Franklin County were able to do so and get hard fought victories. Lilli Stewart kept up her aggressive playstyle and won with a 6-1, 6-0 score. Megan Routh continued her dominance to get the 6-2, 6-3 victory. Lauren Klei finished up a good showing while winning her match 6-1, 6-3. Both doubles teams for Franklin County were able to get victories in their final matches with the #1 duo winning 6-1, 6-4 and the #2 duo winning 6-3, 6-2.

With a perfect team record of 3-0, Franklin County won the Shelbyville Invitational for the first time in school history. Individual winners for the Wildcats included all singles players. Winning at #1 doubles were Sam and Alex Watson from Shelbyville and at #2 was the duo from Seymour.

When asked about the day, head coach Jeff Siebert responded,”I was impressed with the singles as they have been consistent all year long. Lilli is playing really well lately, Megan has really stepped up her game, and Lauren has been steady throughout the season. The doubles got to play some good teams and were able to get experience from those matches. This tournament was a great opportunity to play teams that we wouldn’t normally play during the regular season. Hopefully this tournament gave us a little confidence heading into this tough week ahead of us.”

Following this tournament, the team along with #1 Singles and #3 Singles players Lilli Stewart and Lauren Klei, remain undefeated on the season with records of 8-0. The team will have short time to cherish the tournament victory before starting a busy four match week.
