Batesville 2, Lawrenceburg 1 (OT); 2A Sectional 27 Championship

Lawrenceburg- In a 94-minute match Saturday at Lawrenceburg, the Batesville Lady Bulldogs defeated the host Lady Tigers 2-1 in overtime to claim the 2A Girls Soccer Sectional 27 Title.

It marked the second consecutive 2A trophy for coach Kyle Laker’s BHS bunch.  The loss ended a run of six straight sectional crowns for LHS and coach Bill Offutt.  This was the Tigers first appearance in Class 2A under the new three-class format instituted by the IHSAA in 2017.

Unlike the boys’ 2A-27 championship, played earlier Saturday in Rushville by the same two schools under dry but very windy conditions, the girls’ match in primetime was played under on-and-off showers throughout the first half.

Both keepers made some outstanding stops during the first 40 minutes- Batesville’s Gabi Garcia had four while Lawrenceburg’s Olivia Bosch stopped two.

But late in the first half, the Bulldogs’ Taylor Rowlett danced along the top of the 18.  The senior freed herself up enough to fire a bullet inside of the right post.  Batesville took the lead 1-0 at 4:06 and carried that advantage into halftime.  The Tigers outshot the Bulldogs 7-6, including 4-3 on frame.

Lawrenceburg tied the match 1-1 at 32:36 on a 28-yard free kick by sophomore Avery Seig.  Her ball went above both a Tiger forward crossing from the right and a leaping keeper before slipping in just under the crossbar.

There were a few near misses by each club over the final 30-plus minutes of regulation but neither squad could break the tie.  In the second half, the Tigers took five shots, all on goal while the Bulldogs shot six times, putting two on frame.

In the first seven-minute overtime half, Batesville scored just 32 seconds into the extra session.  Rowlett took a throw in from Carlie Werner and crossed the ball from the left side of the 18.  The rock rolled untouched across the face of the goal to a waiting Marigrace Anderson near the right.  The unmarked junior punched in the short shot to give Batesville a 2-1 lead.  Anderson was not identified correctly during the live webcast. Sorry Marigrace. At least we got it right in print.

From there, Batesville’s defense did not allow a shot over the final 13:28 and, as a result, earned a repeat 2A sectional championship.
