Tindley 74, Jac-Cen-Del 59; 1A Regional 15 Championship

Shelbyville- For a third consecutive year, Jac-Cen-Del and Tindley faced off for the girls basketball Class 1A Regional 15 championship.

In 2016, the Lady Eagles won the regional for an eighth time and went on to claim their first state title.  In 2017, the Lady Tigers won a 49-47 thriller to snag it’s first-ever regional crown.

The 2018 pairing saw No. 3 Tindley take control in the second quarter and defeat No. 4 Jac-Cen-Del 74-59 to secure back-to-back regional trophies for the Tigers.

The Tigers scored the game’s first five points.  Coach Scott Smith’s Eagles took their only lead at 10-9 but trailed 17-15 at the end of one.

Coach Kevin Merriweather saw his Tindley troops start to score in bunches during the second period.  By halftime, the Tigers led by 12, 35-23.  Many of their buckets were generated off their defense which forced nine Eagle turnovers.  Those breakout baskets aided in the team’s 65 percent shooting from 2-point range at intermission.

Nola Wilson of Tindley and Lilly Simon of JCD both had 10 points through 16 minutes.  Wilson hit two triples while Simon had one trifecta and one traditional 3-point play.  Also for the Tigers, Skye Williams and Trinae Love each scored six while Mariah Day had five for the Eagles.

Jac-Cen-Del never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way and trailed by as many as 16 points in the third quarter.  It was a 14-point difference at the end of third, 58-44.

In the fourth, Tindley’s lead peaked at 20 points before settling at 15 when the final horn sounded, 74-59.

Williams played a great second half. Just from a scoring perspective, she netted 17 points which gave her a team-high 23.  Simon continued to battle throughout the second half posting 14 more points for a game-high total of 24.  SEI Local Sports congratulates Tindley’s Skye Williams and Jac-Cen-Del’s Lilly Simon as our Whitewater Motor Company’s Players Of The Game.
