Greensburg 55, Rushville 46; 3A Sectional 29 Semifinal

Aurora- Greensburg and Rushville led off a great night of Class 3A Sectional 29 semifinal basketball Friday at South Dearborn.  The game one final saw the second ranked Lady Pirates best the defending sectional champ Lady Lions, 55-46.

On December 9 in Greensburg, these two teams met for an EIAC conference game.  It was very one-sided in all aspects as the Lady Bucs rolled to an 80-45 victory.

Any basketball person with an ounce of sanity and intelligence didn’t think there would be a repeat in the rematch.  There was no such blowout.  Instead, Rushville held its own with favored Greensburg, but it was indeed the favorites who won by nine.

After a 5-0 start by the Pirates, coach Melissa Marlow’s Lions took the lead on a 6-0 run and later held a 12-10 advantage at the end of the period.

In the second quarter, Rushville’s lead was five at multiple points.  The latest came at 21-16.  But Greensburg closed with the half’s final five points to square the affair at 21-21.

Through 16 minutes, Greensburg got eight points from Aliyah Evans and six on a pair of triples by Rhegan Day.  Rushville’s Taylor Browning and Isabella Runnebohm also booked six points each.

In the December meeting, Greensburg dominated the boards 40-14. But after two quarters Friday, it was Rushville which held a slight 16-14 edge on the glass and shot a more efficient 41 percent from the floor compared to Greensburg’s 28.

But the momentum the Buccaneers started to build late in the second quarter carried over into the third.  Coach Jason Simpson’s EIAC champs scored eight of the quarter’s first nine points to jump in front 30-22.
