Rushville 46, South Dearborn 36; 3A Sectional 29- Round 1

Aurora- South Dearborn made a game of it, but Rushville, the winningest girls’ basketball program in IHSAA sectional history (31 titles), prevailed Tuesday, 46-36.

This game was seen live as part of our Dearborn County Hospital Basketball Webcast Schedule.  See it again archived in 720p HD by clicking here.

Coach Kent Vories’ Lady Knights, host of Class 3A Sectional 29, came out with energy and enthusiasm to lead 10-6 at the end of the first quarter.  Consecutive 3-balls by South Dearborn’s Brooke Huddleston helped fuel an 8-0 SD run during the period.

In the second stanza, down 12-6, coach Melissa Marlow’s Lady Lions strung together 11 straight points to go up 17-12.  Rushville didn’t do it with great shooting but did so with second chance points coming off a great effort on the offensive glass.

Rushville held a 20-14 lead at half and boasted an 8-1 advantage in offensive rebounds.  Tori Campbell booked a pair of triples in the quarter to help turn the Lions around offensively.

A third arc buster by Campbell and a traditional 3-point play by Taylor Browning pushed the Rush County gals lead to 11, 32-21, in the third.  It was 36-27 Lions at the end of three.  Browning had five points in the quarter.  Teammate Isabella Runnebohm and both Katie Townsend and Kyrstin Bond of SD all had four.

The Knights got as close as seven points early in the fourth quarter but the Lions were able to prevent any greater threat.  The 2017 defending sectional champions advanced to Friday’s semifinals with a 46-36 win over South Dearborn.

Both teams hit 39 percent from the floor, but Rushville took 13 more shots.  The Lions out-boarded the Knights 32-18 including 13-2 on the offensive end.
