East Central 57, Edgewood 25- 4A Sectional Final

Ellettsville- No close shave this week.  After surviving last Friday’s 9-7 home sectional semifinal nail biter against conference foe South Dearborn, East Central dominated at Edgewood in Ellettsville Friday, 57-25.

Coach Don Stonefield and the Trojans won the program’s 19th sectional championship and fourth straight in Class 4A Sectional 23.

The Trojan offense was just three yards shy of 500 gaining 358 yards rushing on 42 carries.  The bulk came from Alex Maxwell and Eric Rosemeyer.  Maxwell rushed 10 times for 131 yards and three touchdowns.  Rosemeyer logged 11 totes for 128 yards and two TDs.

Maxwell also completed 8 of 14 passes for 139 yards and one touchdown, a 26-yard connection to Trevor Becker.  Becker was the Trojans’ leading received with three catches for 47 yards.

Defensively, EC got into the Mustangs’ backfield numerous times.  Brett Fox, Gage Ertel and Nate Griffin all had a quarterback sack while Fox had three of the team’s six tackles for a loss.  One each was booked by Kyle Krummen, Griffin and Ertel.  Devon Donawerth also picked of an Edgewood pass and recovered a fumble.  Liam Jones also had a defensive recovering marking three takeaways by the EC defense.  The fumbles were caused by Andrew Ober and Kole Viel.

The Trojans only led 7-0 after the first quarter.  Rosemeyer scored on a 28-yard run at the 10:17 mark.  Caden Browndyke’s extra point kick followed.

The Mustangs tied the game at 11:22 in the second when Schuyler Curtis threw to Parker Hall for a 52-yard TD reception.  Austin Heckman added the kick after. It was 7-7.

But then East Central scored on four straight possessions.  Rosemeyer got his second rushing touchdown from 12 yards out with 7:45 showing, Maxwell had a 4-yard TD run at 6:25 then threw that 26-yard pass to Becker at the 4:25 mark.  Browndyke made all three extra points and added a 38-yard field goal with 23 seconds left to set the halftime score at 31-7.

The Trojans buried the Mustangs by scoring on three possessions in the third quarter.  At 9:50 and 6:09 respectively, Maxwell scored on runs of 33 and 28 yards. Jake Fike followed with an 11-yard touchdown at the 4:53 mark of the period.  EC converted one extra point kick, missed a second and failed on a conversion run but, by that point, had blown the game wide open leading 50-7.

It became 50-14 with 51 seconds left in the third when Edgewood’s Levon Bellemy scored from six yards away.

Both teams added a TD in fourth.  The Trojans’ Noah Wheat scored with 9:31 to play on a 14-yard carry.  Sophie Browndyke added the PAT.  Then it was Bellemy finding the end zone one more time on a 5-yard run.  Curtis completed a 2-point pass to Eithan Jacobs with 3:46 to go and rounded out the scoring in a 57-22 final.
