East Central 9, South Dearborn 7- 4A Sectional Semifinal

St. Leon-  What a game!  Friday’s 4A Sectional 23 semifinal came down to a made Caden Browndyke 32-yard field goal with 6.6 seconds left which gave East Central a 9-7 come-from-behind victory over South Dearborn.

This game was seen live as part of our Margaret Mary Health Fall Webcast Schedule.  See it again archived in 720p HD by clicking here.

The October 26 postseason meeting in St. Leon was in stark contrast to the September 21 conference game in Aurora where East Central won 42-12.  It also was unlike most EC/SD games where nearly all have been decided by 30 or more points since the Knights last beat the Trojans in September 1997.

This game truly was amazing!

Normally, we present our Whitewater Motor Company Player(s) Of The Game near the end of the story.  But we’re going to give both top billing now.

First- Caden Browndyke.  The East Central kicker converted three of four field goals on a night where the Trojan offense never found the end zone.  He missed once in the first half from 44 yards.  His kick was adversely affected by a bad snap.  But he made all three second half triples from 37, 34 and the mega-clutch game winner from 32 yards.

Second- the South Dearborn defense.  The Knights did not surrender a touchdown to an offense which came in averaging 45 points a game.  The last time East Central did not score a TD was September 1, 2017 in a 13-0 loss at Cincinnati LaSalle.

In addition, the Trojans had amassed 533 yards of offense against the Knights back in September.  During Friday’s rematch, coach Rand Ballart’s South Dearborn “D” held East Central’s “O” to 214 yards. That total was only slightly bettered on August 2 by the 210 yards allowed by Cincinnati Oak Hills, the only team to defeat EC this season (28-21).

East Central’s defense was, for the most part, it’s usual stingy self but with one exception.  South Dearborn did record the game’s only touchdown drive and it covered 99 yards.

About 3-1/2 minutes into the second quarter, the Trojans’ Eric Rosemeyer had an incredible punt.  It was a 55-yard gem that stopped rolling without assistance on the SD 1-yard line.  And after that punt, the Trojans had to feel pretty good about their chances of getting the ball back in great field position as the Knights, up to that point, were in the negative for offensive yardage.  But that was about to change in a major way.
