Batesville 42, Greensburg 21; Bulldogs win EIAC 3A title

Batesville- Batesville wrapped up the EIAC 3A title on Friday with a 42-21 victory over Greensburg.  On Senior Night for the Bulldogs, it was only fitting a couple of seniors led the way for the home team as Austin Siefert and Trey Heidlage multiple broke the school records.  More on both later in our Whitewater Motor Company Players Of The Game segment.

This game was seen live as part of our Margaret Mary Health Fall Webcast Schedule.  See it again archived in 720p HD by clicking here.

The two teams traded big plays in the first half.  The first was turned in Greensburg’s Joey Woods.  After the Pirate defense forced a Batesville punt for the second consecutive possession, Woods fielded the ball at his own 38.  He found a running lane in the middle of the field and raced untouched into the end zone for a Greensburg touchdown.  Joseph Pacilio added the point after to put GCHS up 7-0.

Batesville answered on its next possession.  Starting from their own 10-yard line, the Bulldogs drove 90 yards in six plays to find the end zone.  The final 64 yards came on a pass from Heidlage to Siefert.  Nate Slavin added the PAT to tie the score at 7-7.

Greensburg went back up by seven on the next possession.  Senior fullback Aaron Black, returning from an ankle injury, carried for the first five plays and converted a fourth down.  From the 50-yard line, quarterback Toby Brogan faked a handoff and ran around the right side, sprinting into the end zone for the Pirate TD.  Pacilio added his second extra point to make it 14-7 Greensburg less than 2 minutes into the second quarter.

Batesville needed only five plays and a little over one minute to respond.  Starting at their own 21 yard line, the Bulldogs moved 79 yards for a game tying touchdown.  After an incomplete pass to open the drive, Heidlage and Austin Pohlman each rushed for first downs on consecutive plays. Heidlage then connected with Siefert on back-to-back passes, the first for 6 yards and the second for 47 and a touchdown.  Slavin booted his second extra point to even the score, 14-14.

Greensburg had a field goal attempt blocked on its next possession, setting up Batesville with good field position at its own 36.  But the BHS possession was short lived as Brogan picked off the Bulldog pass at the Batesville 48.  Seven plays later, the Bucs turned the turnover into points.  Black carried twice for 14 yards.  Brogan later hit Joey Woods for a 31-yard reception to set up a Pirate 1st-and-goal at the 3-yard line.  Woods took the final handoff over the left side of the line to move Greensburg back in front, 21-14, following another Pacilio XP.
