Pirates’ Hanna, Raiders’ Cole compete in state finals

Terre Haute- It was a second appearance for Greensburg’s Brenner Hanna and the first for South Ripley’s Megan Cole at Saturday’s IHSAA Cross Country State Finals in Terre Haute.

Hanna, a sophomore, covered the 5k LaVern Gibson Championship Course in 19:03 and finished 26th among a field of 208 runners.  That’s the highest state finals finish ever by a Greensburg Lady Pirate.  In 2017, Hanna placed 34th.

Cole, a senior, became the first South Ripley cross country athlete to compete in a state finals.  She placed 63rd with a time of 19:30.

Congratulations to both athletes!

Senior Emma Wilson of Greencastle successfully defended her 2017 girls’ individual championship with a state title time of 17:53.  She edged junior Erin Strzelecki of Fort Wayne Dwenger by seven seconds.

Carroll (Ft. Wayne) won the girls’ team championship with 85 points over second place Zionsville with 149 points.  Last year, Zionsville won by 11 points over Carroll.

Cathedral senior Cole Hocker was the boys’ individual state champ posting a time of 15:25.  He was 16 seconds faster than runner up Gabriel Sanchez, a junior from Lowell.

Carmel won the boys’ team title with 136 points, 10 better than second place Cathedral with 146.  For Carmel, it was the Greyhounds second straight title and fifth in the last seven years.

Please see the next page for a report from Greensburg coach Troy Davis.
