Rebels’ Winston/Smith, Pacers’ Anders, Shawe’s’ Lundergan to semi-state

Varsity Cross Country, Brown County Regional- Saturday, October 13

Neither Southwestern’s boys team or Switzerland County’s girls team qualified for semi-state as a full team; however, each will be sending individuals back to Brown County to compete Saturday, October 20.

To qualify for semi-state, a team must finish in the top five.  Both Southwestern’s boys and Switzerland County’s girls were seventh.

To qualify as an individual, an athlete must be among the top 10 runners not on a qualifying team.  For the Rebel boys, that was Bradley Winston and Trevor Smith.  Winston was 10th overall in a time of 16:40 and made All-Regional (top 20 overall).  Smith placed 29th in 17:25. For the Lady Pacers, Leah Anders moves on with a sixth place All-Regional time of 19:50.  Joining her locally will be Shawe’s Lauren Lundergan who was also All-Regional finishing 16th in 20:40.

Unedited coaches’ reports:

Switzerland County’s Kris Sandlin- “The Pacer Harriers came away with a 7th place regional finish this past Saturday at the Brown County regional. They just missed qualifying for semi state (top 5 teams qualify) but put together their best team performance of the season and had the fastest 1-5 5k average (22:13) of any team in school history at regional competition and the season overall, that includes the 2010 and 2015 semi state teams.”

Individual results as follow: Leah Anders (6th, 19:50, season best), Keirstan Oeffinger (21:51, personal best, #9 all time), Matty Anderson (22:31, personal best, #12 all time), Alisha Detmer (22:48, personal best, #13 all time), Allison Detmer (24:08, personal best, 8 seconds off the top 20 list), Zoe Cole (28:03, competed despite being injured).”

“Leah Anders keeps her season alive one more week as she becomes the only athlete in school history to qualify for semi state competition four times. She competes next Saturday at 11:30am back at Brown County.”

“Help me in congratulating this wonderful group of young ladies. They took advantage of the nice weather, fast course and competition and more importantly enjoyed the opportunity. I am very proud of their work ethic and dedication shown this season.”

Shawe’s Jim Leveille- “Bryan Avalos finished his high school running career with a personal best time of 17:51. Leon Kinne was right behind in a time of 18:06.7. Lauren Lundergan became the first Shawe cross country runner since 1992 to advance to semi-state. Lauren won the 16th overall place ribbon in a personal best time of 20:40.”

We thank the IHSAA for the complete results.
