Greensburg wins Jennings County Sectional

Boys Varsity Tennis at Jennings County Sectional- Friday, September 28 and Saturday, September 29

Greensburg 5, Madison 0- Round 1 Friday

Greensburg’s Gary Bailey-  “The Pirates opened sectional play with a solid win over Madison 5-0.  Brett Stringer got things off to a quick start as he lost no games in winning 6-0, 6-0 over Haniah King at #2 Singles.  Sam Bower and Isaac Tebbe matched Brett as they also won 6-0, 6-0 at #2 Doubles over Dalton Owen and Emerison Cardinal.  Logan Smith and Ben Duerstock nearly pulled off the same as they won at #1 Doubles 6-0, 6-1 over Gage True and Reece Whicker. Trevor Foster, playing #1 Singles, defeated Cooper Yancey 6-2, 6-3 while Charlie Pumphrey won at #3 Singles over Quinten Humes 6-3, 6-1.”

Greensburg 4, Jennings County 1- Championship Saturday

Greensburg’s Gary Bailey- “With a sectional title on the line, Greensburg and host Jennings County met on the court Saturday. It was a cool and crisp fall morning, but the tennis was heated.”

“Just as he did in the semifinal, Brett Stringer got things started well for Greensburg. Stringer raced out to a 5-0 lead in set one before winning 6-1. Set two was the same as Stringer gave the Pirates their first point, winning over Kyle Tempest 6-1, 6-1.”

“In very short order, senior Trevor Foster gave the Pirates a 2-0 lead after he dispatched Thomas Schuler 6-0, 6-2. Trevor played a very solid match over a determined Tempest.”

“The needed third and clinching point came at #1 Doubles when Logan Smith/Ben Duerstock got past Kent Biehle/Weston Miller 6-4, 6-2.  I think the Jennings County duo played the best match they played all year. I give lots of credit to Logan and Ben for staying focused.”

“At #3 Singles, Charlie Pumphrey played an up and down match finally winning 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. Charlie is very good when he puts his mind to it. When it’s time to close things out, he has been pretty good this year. Saturday was one of those days.”

“At #2 Doubles, Sam Bower and Isaac Tebbe dropped their match to Joe Kelly/Wyatt St. John 7-6(3), 6-2. Some days you just do not have your ‘A’ game. I think that was the case with Sam and Isaac. But I also think, like at #1 Doubles, the Jennings County duo played their best tennis of the year.”

This was Greensburg’s eighth straight boys’ tennis sectional championship.

Greensburg will play Bloomington South at Bloomington North High School on Tuesday in the first round of the regional. In the other half of the regional will feature Columbus North against Seymour.

We thank coach Bailey for the match results.
